The stunning "Memorial against War and Fascism" was installed on November 24, 1988 on Helmut Zilk Square on the site of the Philipp Hof apartment building, destroyed during the bombing on March 12, 1945. Hundreds of residents of the capital were hiding in the basement from the bombing, they were covered with debris, there was no one to save people. The Memorial against War and Fascism is: "The Gate of Violence"; sculpture of a Jewish old man who scratches the pavement; monument "Orpheus enters Hades". Author. Alfred Hrdlicka, Austrian sculptor. The "Gate of Violence" is made of granite quarried during the war by prisoners of Mauthausen in a quarry near Linz. The left side of the "gate" is dedicated to the victims of Nazi persecution in concentration camps and prisons. The right side of the "gate" is dedicated to the victims of the war. There is a bronze sculpture of a Jewish old man scratching the pavement outside the "gate". During the occupation of Vienna, the Nazis forced Jews to erase anti-fascist slogans from the streets. The memorial is completed by the monument "Orpheus enters Hades", dedicated to the victims of the bombing. The Memorial against War and Fascism is a reminder of the terrible tragedy. Flowers are brought to the memorial with tears in their eyes and lit lamps are left. It is very important to remember the tragic events of the past years and their consequences. This memorial leaves a deep mark in the memory. Due to the large number of people, it was not possible to take an overview photo of the entire memorial. It would seem that no one can remain indifferent to the tragic events of the past and their consequences, but there are also those who leave cars on the territory of the memorial under a forbidding sign and those who like to take selfies on the back of the sculpture of a Jewish old man. The sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka was forced to complement the sculpture of a Jewish old man with a composition of barbed wire.
