A bronze statue of the Colchian princess Medea holding a Golden Fleece in her outstretched hand. The height of the monument is 130 m. The monument was unveiled on July 6, 2007 during the visit of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to Batumi. The project was designed by architect David Khmaladze. The plot of the monument is rooted in the ancient history of the region: it is believed that once upon a time the legendary civilization of Colchis flourished on the territory of Adjara. According to Greek mythology, Medea, the daughter of the king of Colchis, fell in love with the Argonauts' leader Jason and helped him steal the Golden Fleece, a sacred talisman that ensured the well—being and power of her people. After that, the couple secretly escaped on the famous Argo ship, the image of which is also part of the sculptural composition. Immediately after its installation, the monument attracted some criticism from the Georgian opposition, who considered it an unacceptably luxurious structure for Batumi and the country as a whole. Over time, the statue of Medea has firmly established itself as one of the main business cards of the city. Medea holds a Golden Fleece in her outstretched hand, which means that the princess is giving away a symbol of the greatness and prosperity of her country. Medea's gaze is directed towards the sea, where a ship with Argonauts and Jason sailed to Colchis three thousand years ago. The statue is mounted on a high and narrow pedestal lined with white marble. The sides of the pedestal are elaborately carved with scenes illustrating the myth of the quest for the Golden Fleece. At night, the monument and the surrounding facades of the house are illuminated by colored spotlights. According to history, the mythological Medea, having betrayed her father and fled with Jason and the golden fleece to "Europe", continued her criminal acts by murdering her brother, her children and several other people who are not her relatives - because of these and other facts, some locals are not enthusiastic about this monument; but, if you do not delve into the history and regard it as an architectural value devoid of meaning, the composition fits perfectly into the local flavor.
