This is something incredible! A huge cross on the mountain. And inside there is a very large church with Jesus floating under the dome. A very majestic and beautiful memorial. Weddings are held inside - it looks like a royal family wedding.

In the Valley of the Fallen, in a beautiful wooded and mountainous area next to the Benedictine monastery, stands the monumental Escorial structure. With its gigantic size, it symbolizes the scale of losses, reconciling grief and universal sorrow for the fallen on both sides during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. According to the information guide, it was possible to cut down the basilica in the rock relatively quickly only due to the labor of political prisoners (criminals were not involved in the work), who were promised to shorten their terms. A huge cross and a Pieta (the plot of mourning for Christ) above the entrance carry not only a religious meaning, but also a symbolic one: This is how the Spaniards mourn all the fallen. And the Benedictine monks take care of the colossal mass grave and pray for them. In front of the altar of the basilica, fresh flowers were laid on the tombstones of Francisco Franco (the decision to exhume him was made later) and Jose Antonio Rivera, the founder of the fascist party, in the spring of 2018.
There was an atmosphere of gloomy grandeur inside. Among the huge tapestries (originals of the XV century) and the figures of the Virgin Mary over six chapels, the Archangel Michael and Gabriel in the semi-darkness and cold, I felt extremely uncomfortable. There are 6 million mosaic pieces in the ceiling of the pantheon! Gigantism shocked the mind, but did not touch the soul too much: from here I wanted to get out to the sun, light and warmth as soon as possible. Judging by the small number of visitors on a Saturday afternoon, the place is not the most visited, probably for political and ethical reasons, among others.

A gloomy place. Next to the Escorial. There were no visitors except Russian tourists. You think about the tragedy of Spain. Built by political prisoners. It's worth seeing.
