Position targeting in ad pods
Position targeting lets you serve your campaign at a specific slot within an ad pod.
An ad pod is a sequence of video ads that fills an ad break in a piece of video content. Each video within an ad pod is assigned a position number (1, 2, 3, and so on).
With this targeting type, you can specify the position where your ad should be served within an ad pod.
For example:
- Position 1: First ad in the ad break.
- Position 2: Second ad.
- Positions 3–5: Subsequent ads in the pod.
Targeting By positions in Ad Pods Video is available for accounts with the Ad Pods module enabled.
How targeting works
When preparing an ad pod, the system selects campaigns for each position based on several parameters:
- Campaign limits and targeting settings.
- Campaign level and priority.
- Length of an ad creative.
If a campaign is set to target a specific position, it will only compete for that position.
If multiple campaigns compete for the same position and have the same level and priority, the system selects one at random.
Lower-level campaigns are only eligible to serve at a position if no higher-level campaigns are available for it.
Important notes
- Position targeting in ad pods is applied at the campaign level.
- A campaign with position targeting can be served only at the selected positions.
- If no campaigns are eligible for a selected position, it may be filled with campaigns that don't have position targeting.
- The position is determined relative to the entire ad pod generated for an ad break.
Setting up position targeting
You can configure your campaign to serve at a specific position within ad pods in its targeting settings.
Available positions
You can select one or multiple positions:
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
- 5
- <the other>: All positions except 1–5.
- <any>: Default value.
You can select multiple positions. For example, you can specify both the first and second positions, or select only the second position.
Reports
You can analyze the targeting performance using the following metrics in the Report Builder:
- Position is the position number of an ad impression relative to the entire generated ad pod (relevant for publishers).
- Position in Ad Pods Bidding shows the position at which a campaign was served:
- Within the entire generated ad pod.
- Within ad pod bidding, meaning the subset of the pod generated by a specific bidder.
