The 2,000-meter-wide fortress was destroyed by the Iranian Shah Nodirshah in the 1740s. But the same shah then freed the Russian slaves who were enslaved here. He provided them with food and money, and they quietly returned to their native lands. In 1873, Russian troops conquered this fortress and the khanate as a whole. Today it is an open-air museum, as it houses ancient buildings, mosques, minarets, entrance gates, workshops and trade pavilions, and palaces of former rulers.
