The oldest temple in Vitebsk struck with its beauty. The influence of Byzantine architecture is felt. The whitewashed single-domed church on the left bank of the Western Dvina River is rightfully one of the symbols of the city.

In the center of the city, on the left bank of the Western Dvina, the snow-white facade of the Annunciation Church is recognizable, in which preserved original fragments of masonry from the pre-Mongol period are embedded. This is a unique monument of the Polotsk school of architecture of the 12th century, the exact date is unknown, but the chronicles associate it with Prince Alexander Nevsky, who became engaged to the Polotsk princess in 1239. The temple belongs to the cross-domed type and is unique in its alternation of stone blocks and rows of plinths (flat bricks). The fate of the temple is complicated, but today it is in operation and is not only a symbol of the revival of Orthodoxy in Vitebsk, but also one of the oldest temples in Belarus, in the walls of which fragments of the original masonry have been preserved.

The church was heavily destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, and then completely blown up in 1961. It was recreated in the 1990s using modern materials, while preserving fragments of the original masonry.
