We booked a semi-luxe room for around 110.000 rubles for 4 nights, but instead of a proper view, or some view or at least normal windows, our windows faced a wall with restaurant extractors — blurred glass and an unpleasant outlook and smell. Despite asking several times at reception, it took three days to change our room. The only person who really helped was Frosya, who eventually moved us to a much nicer room overlooking the street. While the first room itself was beautiful, the original location in the building was unacceptable for the price charged and type of room it is. On our last day we tried the hotel breakfast, expecting something special for 4,000 rubles per person, especially given the beautiful old century setting and the standard of the hotel. Instead, it was the worst breakfast we’ve ever had. The selection was extremely poor: cold eggs and bacon, two types of cheese, and a few pieces of fruit. There was no service — just someone taking 8,000 rubles for two people at the door, with no drinks offered and no table assistance. Even budget hotels provide better breakfasts. At this level, either charge 1,000 rubles for what was offered, or truly deliver a 4,000-ruble experience with proper service, hot dishes, caviar, and variety. We were very glad we hadn’t included breakfast in our stay. We had a gorgeous breakfast in the Bolshoi restaurant around the corner with pancakes, red caviar, poached eggs, salmon served by waiters in white gloves and silver utensils for 4000 rubles for the two of us!! We loved the hotel’s location and historical style, but it doesn’t match modern standards of service. Breakfast was appalling, the bar was pleasant but very dull (despite the barman being excellent), and we had a bad experience with our first room — only Frosya made an effort to help. While the rooms themselves are beautiful, the service, the toiletries, the breakfast, and atmosphere simply don’t justify the prices. Sadly, we wouldn’t return, as we’d prefer a hotel that truly understands guest needs and delivers services in line with its rates.
