The church was built in 1882-1887 on the site of the old Paytashen temple on the initiative of Catholicos Gevorg 5. It received its name because of the chapel in which the icon "Seven Sorrows of the Holy Virgin" was kept. According to legend, the icon was painted directly from the Virgin Mary on sheep's clothing. The temple operated even in Soviet times, when all other churches throughout the republic were closed.
