You enter the Field of Mars expecting to see a park; within a few steps, you realise that you are walking through the memory of Saint Petersburg. Its vast lawns, intersecting paths and immense opening towards the sky offer room to breathe after the city’s heavy stone façades. Yet there is an inexplicable weight hidden inside this spaciousness. It feels as though the earth listens to every person walking upon it while refusing to reveal what it knows. The April wind was harsh. When I approached the flame at the centre of the field, I watched it bend beneath every gust and rise again. At that moment, it seemed less like a monument and more like the instinct to endure that lives within us: it grows smaller, it trembles, it appears almost ready to disappear, yet it refuses to surrender to the darkness. An elderly woman passed in front of me carrying two red carnations. She quietly laid one down and concealed the other inside her coat. As I watched her, I imagined that one flower belonged to the dead, while the other belonged to those who still had to continue living. Saint Petersburg does not tell its history only through palaces and monuments; sometimes it speaks through gestures so small that the entire city seems to fall silent around them. I did not remain there for long, yet I was no longer the same person when I left. The Field of Mars is less a place of entertainment than a vast silence inviting you to lower your voice. While the noise of the city flows around its edges, time slows at its centre. You cannot cross it without remembering the people you have left behind, the defeats you still carry and the roads you never found the courage to take. If you are merely searching for another place to see in Saint Petersburg, add it to your list. But if you wish to touch the soul of the city, even for a few minutes, slow your steps, stand before the flame and listen to what the wind has come to tell you.
