Subtitles

The interactive subtitles created by Yandex can help you learn a foreign language, understand the meaning of a song, or sing karaoke. Subtitles can match the video's original language or be translated into Russian or another language. When viewing subtitles for the original language, you can tap an unfamiliar word to see its translation.

Note

You can enable and configure subtitles only when the video isn't in fullscreen mode.

The process of enabling and setting up subtitles depends on the video's original language (Russian or another language).

Videos in other languages

Yandex Start can show subtitles for videos that have been translated for voice-over by Yandex.

A foreign-language video without a Yandex translation may also have subtitles, but those would be provided by the hosting platform (for example, YouTube) or the video uploader. Such subtitles, if available, need to be turned on the same way as Yandex subtitles.

Note

Yandex provides subtitles for videos on a number of hosting sites, including Coursera, VK, YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, and 9GAG.

Videos are translated into Russian from English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese. The technology is still under development, so not all videos are translated at the moment.

If translation is available, you'll see the icon saying Translate video.

Enable and configure subtitles

  1. Next to the translation icon, tap .
  2. Enable Subtitles.
  3. Configure the subtitles:
    • Subtitle language: You can select the original language or translation. If the video already has subtitles, you can select the service's subtitles instead of Yandex ones.
    • Highlight words: The words that are currently being spoken are highlighted. The option is only available for Yandex subtitles in the original language.

If you have the original-language subtitles enabled and want to translate a word, just tap it. The translation of the word and phrase will appear in a popup window and the video will be paused. To continue watching, tap anywhere on the video.
