Work with constraints

Constraints help your site visitors limit the search area (for example, to search only for PDF documents) without entering search operators manually.

All available constraint types are displayed under the search bar as pseudo links. Clicking the pseudo link opens a window where the user can select a specific constraint.

Site search supports the following constraint types:

  • Document date constraints limit search results to the pages that were modified during the time specified by the visitor (the effectiveness depends on the accuracy of the information that's returned by the web server hosting the site).

  • Site section constraints limit search results to a specific site section (directory), for example, http://mysite.com/about/.

  • Keyword constraints provide a set of keywords that the visitor can add to their search query.

  • Document format constraints limit the search results to documents in the formats selected by the visitor.

  • Document language constraints limit the search results to pages in the languages selected by the visitor.

  • Custom constraints add the search operators you specified to the query.

Note: you can use no more than 5 constraint types per search form, including custom ones. Each form can have no more than 100 constraints of every type.
