By frequency
With frequency targeting, you can limit impressions and clicks for each unique user at the campaign or banner level.
For example, don't show the banner more than twice a day or pause impressions if the user has already clicked on the link on the banner.
To set up targeting:
- Go to Targeting → Add a targeting condition → By frequency.
-
After making changes, click Apply and save the targeting criteria.
Impression limits
Using limits, you can manage the number of impressions per unique user and balance reach, effectiveness, and ad load. To achieve this, Adfox provides three interconnected settings: minimum, average, and maximum frequency.
Maximum frequency is the only strict limit, preventing impressions from exceeding the set value for any user.
Average and minimum frequencies serve as guidelines for impression distribution by the system and aren't treated as strict limits for individual users.
Warning
For correct operation, all values must be consistent: the minimum frequency must be less than or equal to the average, and the average must be less than or equal to the maximum.
-
Average impression frequency is the target value for distributing impressions among users over the selected period.
The system aims for a typical user to receive a number of impressions close to the specified value.
-
Minimum impression frequency sets the floor for the number of ad exposures and is prioritized by the system when distributing impressions.
Users who have already seen an ad may be given higher priority to bring them closer to this minimum. The minimum frequency isn't guaranteed for each user and may not be achieved due to insufficient traffic, narrow targeting, or other factors.
-
Maximum impression frequency prevents overexposure to a single user.
Average impression frequency
This value represents a guideline for the average number of impressions per unique user over a selected period while the campaign is active or throughout its entire duration.
Selecting a period
- To set a value for the entire campaign period, enter an average impression frequency under Entire duration. When this option is selected, you can also set the Minimum period between by impressions, which is the interval between banner impressions for a user.
- To set a value for a different period, select it under Selected period, then specify the desired impression frequency. If none of the preset options suit your needs, select Specify your period and enter a custom time range in the Your period field.
Your set value serves as a target when distributing impressions among users. The system aims to ensure a uniform number of exposures across the audience while avoiding excessive ad load.
The average impression frequency represents the median of the actual number of impressions per user. This approach reduces the influence of outliers with an abnormally high number of impressions, providing a more accurate reflection of the typical ad exposure frequency.
Warning
The actual frequency of impressions for individual users may differ from the average and depends on available traffic and the campaign's limits.
Minimum impression frequency
This value represents the minimum number of impressions per unique user over a selected period while the campaign is active or throughout its entire duration.
This setting helps achieve your exposure targets. The system factors it into ad delivery, subject to available traffic, targeting parameters, and other limits.
Warning
The minimum frequency isn't guaranteed for each user and serves only as a guideline for impression distribution.
Maximum impression frequency
This value represents the maximum number of impressions per unique user over a selected period while the campaign is active or throughout its entire duration.
Maximum frequency transitions
This value represents the total number of clicks each unique user can make over a selected period while the campaign is active or throughout its entire duration.
Selecting a period
- To set a value for the entire campaign period, enter a maximum click frequency under Entire duration. When this option is selected, you can also set the Minimum period between transitions, which is the interval between banner impressions for a user.
- To set a value for a different period, select it under Selected period, then specify a maximum click frequency. If none of the preset options suit your needs, select Specify your period and enter a custom time range in the Your period field.
Setup example
The site has three sections. At the campaign level, the Entire duration field limits impressions to 10, and the Entire duration field limits user clicks to 6.
Frequency targeting for the site wasn't customized.
For Section 1, there are 5 impressions and 3 clicks.
For Section 2, there are 5 impressions and 3 clicks.
For Section 3: Not customized.
With these settings, Sections 1 and 2 can generate a total of 20 impressions and 12 clicks, based on their custom limits. Section 3 inherits the campaign limits (a maximum of 10 impressions and 6 clicks).
