Translate pages, videos, and images

Yandex Start automatically detects the page language. It can translate the page into English or another language of your choice. The translator can recognize text in images and show the translation on top of the original text.

Translate pages, words, and phrases

Pages

To translate a page from another language into English, tap the  icon on the page or select  → Translate page.

At the top of the screen, the translation bar shows the progress. If you want to stop the translation, tap on the right.

To go back to the page in the original language:

Tap on the right of the translation bar.

Tap  → Show original.

Words and sentences

Yandex Start can translate individual words and sentences into Russian. To see the translation of a word or phrase, select it on the page. The translation bar appears at the top of the screen.

To see all translations of a word or phrase:

  1. Select them in the text.
  2. On the bar that appears, tap  → Yandex Translate

To view translation options, install the Yandex Translate app.

Translate images

  1. Tap and hold the image.
  2. In the context menu, select Translate image.

The translation appears on top of the original image.

To see the original image:

  1. Tap and hold the image.
  2. In the context menu, select Show original.
  • If Automatic image translation is enabled in the settings, you can simply translate the page.
  • If Automatic image translation is disabled, tap  on the translation bar at the top of the screen.

To see the original image text, tap . To see the page and the images in their original language, tap on the translation bar.

Note

You can also translate images that are not part of a page. For example, you want to wish a Merry Christmas to your British friend. You can do a search and find lots of greeting cards. But if your English isn't good enough, you can't be sure that the greeting and the recipient's name are correct. To be on the safe side, use Yandex Images.

Change the translation language

Follow these steps to translate a page to the language of your choice:

  1. Translate the page into English the easiest way for you.
  2. Choose your language from the list at the top of the page in the translation bar.

Note

If automatic image translation is enabled in the settings, images are also translated into the new target language. If automatic image translation is disabled, after you change the translation language, tap  at the top of the screen on the translation bar.

Translate pages automatically
  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Go to Yandex Translate.
  3. Enable the Automatic page translation option.
Disable automatic page translation
  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Go to Yandex Translate.
  3. Disable Automatic page translation.
Enable automatic image translation

If you want the browser to translate images automatically when it translates a page:

  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Go to Yandex Translate.
  3. Enable Automatic image translation.
Disable automatic image translation

If you don't want the browser to translate images automatically when translating a page:

  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Go to Yandex Translate.
  3. Disable Automatic image translation.

Disable translation

  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Under Yandex Translate, disable Offer to translate pages.
  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Under Yandex Translate, disable Translate words and phrases.

Problems with translation

Translation doesn't work

Translation is enabled in the browser by default. Make sure that you haven't turned it off manually:

  1. Go to  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Under Translate, make sure the following options are enabled:
    • Offer to translate pages.
    • Automatic page translation (you don't need to request translation: pages are automatically translated into the interface language).
    • Automatic image translation (text in images is also translated along with the entire page).
    • Translate words and phrases.
An image isn't translated

Image text can't be translated if:

  • The image isn't clear enough.
  • The text is handwritten or cursive.
  • The image is too small.
