Actions with chats

Yandex Messenger users can create private and group chats, send messages, leave chats, hide and filter them, and clear message history.

Create a private chat (with one person)
  1. In the chat list, press .
  2. Enter the person's name or select them from the list.
Create a group chat
  1. In the chat list, press .
  2. Click New group chat and add members.

Send a message

Open a chat and enter your message however you like:

  • Using a keyboard. Type a message.

  • Using voice. Press and say your message.

  • As a file. Press and choose the file.

    Note

    All files and images that you send using the  icon are saved to your Yandex Disk in Files → Messenger files. The total amount of attachments is only limited by the free space on your disk. You can send any number of files up to 50 GB each via Yandex Messenger.

To send an important message, press .

The icon next to a message in Yandex Messenger means it has been delivered. The icon means the addressee has read it.

Leave a chat

In the chat, press ( in iOS) and choose Leave chat.

Pin a chat

Chats

  1. In the chat list, right-click on the chat.
  2. Select Pin chat.
  1. In the chat list, tap and hold the chat.
  2. Select Pin chat.
Unpin chat

Chats

  1. In the list of pinned chats, right-click on the chat.
  2. Select Unpin chat.
  1. In the list of pinned chats, tap and hold the chat.
  2. Select Unpin chat.
Move chat

Chats

  1. In the list of pinned chats, left-click on the chat and hold.
  2. Move the chat.
  1. In the list of pinned chats, tap and hold the chat.
  2. Choose Reorder chat.
  3. Drag the chat icon to a new place.
Hide a private chat

You can only hide a private chat on your computer or in your Personal space. To do this, click  → Block and hide.

Clear a private chat

In the chat, press ( on iOS) and select Clear history (Clear chat history on iOS).

Your message history will disappear (but your chat partner will still be able to see it), and the chat will be removed from the chat list. If you want to resume chatting to that person, find them using the search.

Note

You can't delete message history from group chats.

Enable compact chat list

Note

This feature is only available in the web version and the desktop application.

  1. Click .

  2. In the Interface section, enable or disable Compact chat list.

    With this option enabled, more chats are seen on a single screen, but you can't see the messages until you open a chat.

Filter the chat list

This feature is only available in the web version and the desktop application.

Click above the chat list and choose the chats to display:

  • All chats: Chat list with no filters applied.
  • Unread: Chats with new messages that you haven't viewed yet.
  • Mentions: Chats you've been mentioned in.
  • Private: One-to-one chats.
  • Group: Chats with two or more members.
  • Chats from Telemost: Chats created during Yandex Telemost meetings.

Actions with members

Chat users can add new members directly or using chat links (if the administrator granted the permission). If a user violates the rules, other members may report this.

Add a member
  1. Open the chat.

  2. In the upper-right corner, press ( in iOS) and select Chat info.

  3. Select Members.

  4. Press Add.

  5. Find the user, select them, and press Add.

    If your organization uses Yandex 360 for Business, you can add members as well as entire groups or departments to the chat.

Find a user
  1. In the chat, press ( on iOS) and select Chat info.

  2. Select Members.

  3. Type the person's first name, last name, or username in the Search bar.

    If you're work in an organization that uses Yandex 360 for Business, type the name of the group or department in the Search bar, then press it to view all employees in that unit.

Report a user

You can only report a user on a desktop in your Personal space. To do this, right-click the message and select Report. Users who violate the rules of the service may be blocked from Yandex Messenger.

Troubleshooting

I can't add a person to the chat

Possible causes:

  • You are not the chat administrator.

  • You've already invited 10 people today. The daily limit is set to protect you from spam.

    If you want someone to join a chat, send them a chat link.

How do I leave a private chat?

You can't leave a private chat. But you can hide or mute it.

How do I move the chat history from my old device to the new one?

Log in to your account on the old device.

I can't access the chat via the chat link

If you get the "Couldn't join chat" message when following a chat link, ask the chat administrator to enable the Public link setting.
