Unwanted software
Unwanted software (hereinafter referred to as software) includes programs that can cause serious harm to a user or their device. The presence of such programs on a website also harms the reputation of the resource.
If a search bot detects dangerous or unwanted programs on a website, or links to them, it will register the threat of unwanted software distribution.
What situations are considered unwanted software
-
When accessing a website page:
- a malicious script is launched;
- a program is unexpectedly downloaded to the user's device.
-
When downloading a file from the website, a different type of executable file is downloaded.
-
The website contains viruses and spyware.
-
The website offers programs that, when downloaded and run, silently install the following on the user's device:
- additional software;
- software with intrusive methods of attracting user attention;
- hidden miners that use the device's computing power for cryptocurrency mining.
How to eliminate or prevent the violation
- Remove malicious code snippets and links to unwanted software from your website pages.
- Check your website for dangerous files using third-party services and antivirus software.
- Place a text near downloadable files in a visible location. Make the text large, readable, and contrasting with the background.
- Provide information about the functionality and consequences of downloading and installing a file from your website.
- Warn the user if there are multiple options for downloading a file on the website, such as downloading the original program or a program with additional components.
- If you offer a installer (downloader) rather than the program itself for download, clearly warn the user about this.
- Make the button or link for direct file download prominent.
