Broken links

A broken link on the site is a link that does not redirect to the desired page or resource or results in an error.

To ensure that your site’s content is displayed via correct links, it’s important to check and fix broken links from time to time.

You can use the Broken Link Checker tool in Yandex Webmaster to check for broken links on your site. It will help you track the appearance of new links and identify all types of broken links, find errors, and fix them.

Data on broken links is formed based on the pages known to the Yandex bot. Some links may not be displayed in Yandex Webmaster.

Broken links without clicks

Broken links that users do not attempt to follow may be the result of errors in the site’s code, incorrect links, or deleted pages.

Broken links without clicks may be:

  • external — these are links to the pages of your site leading from the pages of other sites;
  • internal — these are links to the pages of your site leading from other pages of your site.

Clicks on broken links

A link click is an action when a user clicks a link to go to another site or page. Clicks on broken links redirect the user to pages with information about the resource’s unavailability. Errors as a result of such clicks occur due to page deletion or incorrect URLs. For details, see Clicks on broken links.

The following reasons may explain why some links are not shown:

  • The page where the link to your site is located is unknown to the Yandex bot.
  • The link can lead to a non-primary mirror of your site: using a different protocol (HTTP or HTTPS), with or without the www prefix.
  • If the resource contains several links to the same page of your site and the link text is the same, Yandex Webmaster displays only one of these links.
  • The link is formatted as text, meaning it isn't a clickable hyperlink (for example, www.example.com).
  • The link doesn't point directly at your site, but links via an intermediary page with a redirect (including a link from a social network).
  • The link appeared on the page recently, and users have not yet clicked on it.
