Creating RTB blocks

In the Real-Time Bidding ad blocks, you can display contextual ads (content ads), display ads, and video ads.

You can use the visual code designer to create blocks in the Yandex Advertising Network interface. The designer lets you specify the ad format, select the appearance of your ad block, and configure it to match the design of your site.

To create a new RTB block, go to the list of RTB blocks: Products → Content sites → RTB blocks, and click Add RTB block.

Step 1. General

Select the placement platform and enter the name of the block. Specify the privacy level.

Step 2. Site version
Select the site version that you would like to create an ad block for. The available formats vary depending on the version:
  • Desktop: The maximum set of formats that are suitable for serving ads on desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.
  • Mobile: Special formats that are suitable for serving ads on mobile devices.
  • Turbo pages for mobile: Special ad block formats that work for Turbo sites. Turbo pages can't contain blocks of other formats (for example, the formats designed for the mobile site version).
  • Turbo pages for desktop: Special ad block formats that are suitable for sites that use the Turbo technology for desktop pages. You can't place blocks of other formats on Turbo pages (for example, those designed for a regular desktop version of the site).
  • AMP pages — special ad block formats that are suitable for sites that use the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) technology. AMP pages can't contain blocks of other formats (for example, those designed for the mobile site version) and video ads.
Step 3. Advertising formats

Add ad formats to the block: display ads, Text & Image Ads, and videos. Then configure the design of the blocks to display contextual ads (learn more about types and formats of RTB blocks).

To add an ad format, click on the block's card.

The preview area is in the center of the block setup window. To check how the ad block will look on the desktop or mobile version of the site, specify its width and height in pixels. For the mobile version of the site, you can evaluate how the block will look on different devices, with the horizontal or vertical screen orientation.

Media ads

Select the horizontal and vertical formats for your block. The more formats you choose, the more advertisers can participate in the auctions, and the higher your potential revenue.

Enable Show in Interscroller to make the block's ad appear smoothly from under the content when scrolling and hide under the content using the parallax effect. You can set the background for the ad layer that appears from under the content.

You can set ad display time and full-screen display in the mobile version of the site.

Text & Image ads

Specify the block type: vertical or horizontal. The list of formats displays all the suitable ad block formats. For flexible blocks (with the exception of square ones), you need to set the maximum number of Yandex.Direct ads yourself. Specify the width and height of a custom block.

Customize the design of Yandex.Direct ads in the block: select the font type and font size, palette, shape of corners, and borders. All the changes are immediately displayed in the test block. The design of your ad block significantly influences the CTR and, consequently, your site revenue.

You can also add callouts and disable showing sitelinks and advertiser site icons in Yandex.Direct ads. Note that in accordance with the Terms of Participation, the “Yandex.Direct” link and the advertisers' domains must be clearly visible and easily distinguishable.

Note. You can create multiple Text & Image Ad design options for an RTB block and use the Design auction tool to select the most profitable design for your site.

For the desktop version of the site, you can set the scale in the preview area:

  • Autoscaling: The size of the test container is automatically selected to fully fit into the code designer field.
  • Actual size: You set the length and width of the test container.
  • Fit to width (height): The test container is displayed so that your width (height) fits to the designer field, with the height (width) changed proportionally.

You will see changes if the test container fails to fit into the designer field. The scale settings don't affect the block and are used for convenience.

Video ads

To add video ads, click Add format. Make sure that the ad block size on your site is at least 320 × 180 pixels. You can't use smaller blocks to display your video ads. We also don't recommend that you place blocks with video ads enabled on the first screen: video ads might not have enough time to load in this case and the block's monetization will be low.

To evaluate the block's look-and-feel on the site, specify the sizes of the area and preview block. For the mobile version of the site, you can select the device and screen orientation.

For the desktop version of the site, you can use Fix block when scrolling. If you enable it, the block is not hidden behind the visible area border when the user scrolls the page. Instead, it's fixed in the position specified in the Fixed position parameter.

For banners, you can set up a light or dark color scheme. Fixed position Auto (a banner at the top or bottom) automatically sets the block position. When the user scrolls the page up, the block is fixed at the top of the page. When the user scrolls down, the block is fixed at the bottom of the page.

For the desktop version of the site, you can set the scale in the preview area using the menu:

  • Autoscaling: The size of the test container is automatically selected to fully fit into the code designer field.
  • Actual size: You set the length and width of the test container.
  • Fit to width (height): The test container is displayed so that your width (height) fits to the designer field, with the height (width) changed proportionally.

You will see changes if the test container fails to fit into the designer field. The scale settings don't affect the block and are used for convenience.

Step 4. Strategy

Choose a traffic management strategy. You can also specify your own ad code. This lets you display ads from other ad systems on the same ad spot, or install a stub in case the RTB auction has no suitable offer to serve.

Attention. The RTB block code can't be embedded into the code of other banner systems (DFP, AdRiver, etc.). If you want to maximize your revenue by showing ads for multiple systems, use the Minimum CPM threshold strategy. ADFOX customers can link their Yandex Advertising Network and ADFOX accounts and create RTB advertising blocks in the ADFOX interface.

Click Create.

Placing ad code on a website

Select Code execution type in the RTB embed code for the site (synchronous/asynchronous). You can also specify the statistical slice ID in the ad code.

Copy the JavaScript code and insert it into the HTML of your webpage in the place you would like to display the ads. We recommend that you copy the code using the Copy to clipboard button, because the text editor might truncate or wrap long strings, which might cause errors when running the JavaScript code. Make sure the code does not get modified during copying.

The block's impressions will begin in 30-60 minutes after you place the code on your site. Statistics for the block will start collecting immediately, but you'll have to accumulate a certain amount of data for the information to start showing up in the interface.

Block ID

A unique ID will be assigned to the block after it's saved, and the block will be displayed in the list of RTB blocks. A block ID (ID) consists of a product ID (R-A), platform ID (page_id) and the block's serial number.

Restriction. You cannot place blocks with the same IDs on the same page of the site. If you want to create another block with the same settings, click Duplicate. The new block will be displayed in the list of RTB blocks.
