How to start displaying ads

You can start getting acquainted with the Yandex Advertising Network right after filling out the application. You'll be granted access to the Yandex Advertising Network interface automatically.

To start displaying ads:

  1. Add a site or app. To monetize the app, additionally confirm access to it.
  2. Pass resource moderation.
  3. Create an ad unit.
  4. Embed the ad code on the site or in the app.

Ads are picked based on the site's or app's content and the interests of each particular user.

Setting up impressions

Step 1. Site moderation

The site you added in the Advertising Network interface will appear in the list of content sites and will be submitted automatically for moderation. Site moderation usually takes less than a day, but in rare cases, it may take up to a few days.

To see the site moderation status, go to Ads on websites → Sites and ad units. Once your site passes moderation, you'll be able to create and place ad units.

Step 2. Create an ad unit

  1. In the Yandex Advertising Network interface, go to Ads on websites → Sites and ad units, switch to the list of ad units and click New ad unit.

  2. Select the site that you want to create an ad unit for and click Next.

  3. Determine the unit type:

    Banner

A universal unit whose size adapts to the size of the framing container on the page. The unit is available for display on different devices: desktop, mobile devices, AMP pages, and Turbo pages. The banner can display Adaptive  Text & Image ads, display ads, and video ads.

For more information about this unit type, see Banner.

    Fullscreen

The ad occupies the entire screen, the user can close it at any time after the close button appears. The unit is displayed on mobile and desktop devices. It can contain Text & Image Fullscreen  , display, and video ads.

For more information about this unit type, see Fullscreen.

    Rewarded

The ad occupies the entire screen. When the user views the ad, they get a reward (for example, access to a file or exclusive content on the site). The time before the reward is shown as a countdown timer. If the user closes the ad earlier, they won't get rewarded. The unit is displayed on mobile and desktop devices. It can contain Text & Image Fullscreen  , display, and video ads.

For more information about this unit type, see Rewarded.

    Floor Ad

The ad unit appears on top of the site content at the bottom of the screen two seconds after the page is opened. The user can close the ad at any time. Floor Ads are displayed on mobile and desktop devices.

For more information about this unit type, see Floor Ad.

    Top Ad

Top Ads are only shown on mobile devices. The unit appears two seconds after the page opens and is fixed at the top of the screen on top of the site content. The user can close the ad at any time. The unit can contain Adaptive  Text & Image ads and display ads. For more information about this unit type, see Top Ad.

    Feed

The unit looks like a feed of Adaptive  Text & Image ads. It's placed under the content of the main page on the last or second-to-last screen (except when the page length is less than or equal to two screens). When placed on a Turbo page, the Feed appears immediately after the first article. The unit is available for display on desktop, mobile devices, and Turbo pages.

For more information about this unit type, see Feed.

  4. Enter a unit name to be used in the Yandex Advertising Network interface.

  5. Set the CPM floor:

    • Maximum revenue: Determine the minimum cost of impressions automatically. With this option, you can effectively fill placements and maximize revenue for the site owner.

    • CPMV floor: Set your own minimum cost per thousand impressions based on a viewability check. The CPMV floor is set in rubles, US dollars, or euros. You can change the floor currency in your account settings.

      Alert

Setting a CPMV floor can reduce the unit fill rate and, therefore, decrease your income.

  6. Specify the display settings for the following unit types:

    Banner
    • If you're creating a unit for AMP or Turbo pages, select AMP or Turbo in the Turbo / AMP field. For desktop and mobile site versions, leave the No value.

      Note

The same unit can be placed on the desktop and mobile versions of the site: it will be displayed on all devices. Units created for AMP or Turbo pages can be placed only on AMP or Turbo pages.

    • Specify the size of display ads in the unit:

      • Adaptive: The unit size is limited only by the size of the framing container on the site. For a banner, you should specify the size of the framing container yourself in the layout of the site and this determines which ad formats can be shown in the unit. For recommendations on how to determine the size of the container, see Configuring unit sizes.
      • Adaptive with limitations: Enables you to set the maximum and minimum values for the unit height and width in pixels. In that case, when ads are selected, both the size of the container on the site and the limitations set in the Advertising Network interface are taken into account.

If the minimum value is not set, the ad for the desktop Floor Ad unit occupies 90 pixels in height and no more than the specified maximum value in width. These are the default values. For all other units: at least 40% of the container in height and 70% of the container in width.

      • Fixed: Enables you to determine the exact unit size in pixels. The unit will only display ads of the specified size (provided that the unit size is smaller than the size of the container on the site).

      Note

When selecting the Adaptive with limitations and Fixed sizes, take into account the size requirements of fixed display advertising ad formats. To display these formats, the unit size must exactly match or exceed the size of the display banner.

For more information about the size requirements depending on the ad format, see Configuring unit sizes.

    • Customize the border for Text & Image ads and video ads:

      • In the Border presence field, select the value:

        • Auto: The border presence is determined by the Yandex Advertising Network algorithms for each specific impression;
        • Yes: There is always a border;
        • No: There is never a border:
      • In the Border corners field, select the type of corners:

        • Auto: The shape of the corners is determined by the Yandex Advertising Network algorithms for each specific impression.
        • Right.
      • Rounded.

For more information about the border properties, see Banner.

    • Determine the interscroller settings: if the option is enabled, ads appear smoothly from under the content when scrolling and hide under it using the parallax effect. By default (the Auto option), display in interscroller is disabled.

      Note

If interscroller is enabled, make sure that the transform, perspective, or filter properties aren't applied to the parent elements of the unit when placing it on the site.

    Fullscreen
    • The Impression limit setting lets you set up the frequency of unit impressions to unique users. The default frequency is no more than once per 5 minutes. To change the value, in the fields:

      • Impression limit: Select the number of impressions from 1 to 3.
      • Restriction period: Set the period during which the unit can be displayed the maximum number of times. For a period of 5 or 10 minutes, the maximum number of impressions can't exceed 1.

For example, if you want the unit to appear no more than 1 time per hour, select 1 in the Impression limit field and select 1 hour in the Restriction period field.

    • Allowed sections, Restricted sections: Specify the site sections where you want to allow or restrict impressions of fullscreen units. To do this, enter a part of the path to the section after the domain name starting with the / symbol. To add multiple sections, separate them with commas. For example: /news,/feed.

Every time a user navigates to a new page, the ad tag checks whether it can display fullscreen ads in this section. The ad is displayed if the uploaded page is in the allowed section and there's no violation in the frequency of impressions to a unique user. For more information about placing fullscreen unit code, see How to add a fullscreen unit to your site.

    • Delayed close button enables you to set the time until the close button appears: the user can close the unit no earlier than the specified number of seconds. The default value is 0 (the Close button appears immediately). You can set the delay for the Close button to 1 to 3 seconds.

    Floor Ad

Specify the size of ads in the unit:

    • Adaptive: The unit size is limited only by the size of the framing container on the site. For Floor Ad, the container is created automatically:

      • The container width is equal to the length of the short side of the screen.
      • The container height is equal to 15% of the long side of the screen.

    Top Ad

Specify the size of ads in the unit:

    • Adaptive: The unit size is limited only by the size of the framing container on the site. For Top Ad, the container is created automatically:

      • The container width is equal to the length of the short side of the screen.
      • The height of the container is 50 – 100 pixels.

    Feed

If you're creating a unit for Turbo pages, select Turbo in the Turbo / AMP field. For desktop and mobile site versions, leave the No value.

    Note

The same unit can be placed on the desktop and mobile versions of the site: it will be displayed on all devices. Units created for Turbo pages can only be placed on them.

  7. Choose a theme: Dark or Light. The default option is Light theme. Dark theme units have a different background and color scheme for their text, frame, buttons, and other elements. The selected theme is applied to all ad formats within the unit.

  8. Choose how you want to configure ad formats:

    • Use standard settings: When this option is selected, the unit displays all available ad formats (depending on the unit type). The design and display parameters are determined automatically. We recommend choosing this option for the first ad unit.

    • Configure the formats: You can disable the display of some formats or change the display settings. For more information about format configurations, see:

  9. Click Create. A window with the embed code will open. Use this code to place the ad unit on your site.

Once you save the ad unit, it will be assigned a unique identifier (ID). It consists of a product ID (R-A), site ID (site_id), and the unit's serial number.

Step 3. Place ad code on a site

  1. Get the embed code: create a new unit or click Get code in the line with an existing unit.

  2. Copy the ad loader code to the clipboard and paste it at the beginning of the web page between the <head> and </head> tags. The loader code is only embedded on the page once and is used to call all units of the Yandex Advertising Network.

  3. Insert the ad unit code. Copy the code to the clipboard and paste it into the HTML code of your site depending on the unit type:

    • Banner: Between the <body> and </body> tags where the ad should be displayed. For more information about how to effectively place adaptive ads, see How to add a banner to your site.
    • Fullscreen: To <head> immediately after the ad loader or to <body> of the page. We recommend adding both codes to <head> of all existing pages, as well as to the script that generates <head> for new site pages. This way, you won't have to add the unit tag separately to each created page. You can disable impressions of a fullscreen unit on certain pages in the unit settings of the Yandex Advertising Network interface. To do this, specify the allowed or restricted site sections.
    • Rewarded: To <body> of the page so that it can be invoked by pressing a button or performing an action on the site. Before placing the code, add the onReward callback function to it and define the reward action. For more information, see How to add a rewarded unit to your site.
    • Floor Ad or Top Ad: To <head> immediately after the ad loader or to <body> of the page.
    • Feed: To <body> of the page after the main content.

Step-by-step instructions on how to add an app are available in the Ads in Mobile Apps Help.

What should I do next?

Unit impressions start within 2 hours after it's created (provided you embedded the code of the unit on your resource and the resource passed moderation). The statistics for the unit will start being collected immediately, but you'll have to accumulate a certain amount of data for the information to start showing in the interface.

To increase the revenue you receive from ads on your site, try experimenting with various ad unit settings and see which configurations work best for you.
