Standard design

Standard design is an ad format for text and image ads. The ad design is created automatically.

The standard design unit size is calculated automatically based on the width and height of its container. In the preview area, you can view how the unit will be displayed with different framing containers.

For the desktop version of the website, you can set the scale in the preview area:

  • Autoscaling: The size of the test container is automatically selected to fully fit into the ad unit designer field.
  • Actual size: You set the length and width of the test container.
  • Fit to width (height): The test container is displayed so that your width (height) fits the ad unit designer field. The height (width) is adjusted proportionally.

For the mobile version of the website, select the device model and the vertical or horizontal orientation of the device in the preview area.

Adaptive Smart Design

The Adaptive  format uses Smart Design technology. It determines which ad elements are relevant to each particular user and your ad platform and can add text, sitelinks, an action button, and other design elements if necessary. As a result, all ads designed by the Smart Design algorithm will look unique.

These types of units adjust to the size of its container. You determine the size of the unit and its container yourself.

For the desktop version of the website, you can configure the display of the ad as a billboard.

How to effectively place adaptive ads

Adaptability is an ad unit's property to change its size based on its contents and the container's parameters. The unit width usually fills the container's width, while the unit's height is determined by the container height as well as the ad's design and the number of elements. This lets you show video and image ads without cropping them as well as dynamically combine elements depending on the user.

The bigger the size range allotted to the unit by the container, the more adaptive your ad will be. This lets you display ads of different sizes for different types of devices and avoid inconsistencies between the size of the ad and the size of the screen.

Basic criteria for adaptive ads in Yandex:

  • The ad unit fits the width organically: it should align with the width of the ad or the full screen width for mobile versions and be placed on side panels to the right or left of the main content for desktop versions.
  • The ad unit has a non-fixed (dynamic) height and fit a vertical container (its width is smaller than its height). This is what determines the ad's adaptability.

Please note that adaptive ads may offset content while the page loads. Below you can find our recommendations on how to place and set up ad unit so they don't affect the user experience, including the CLS metric.

Adaptive unit recommendations

To ensure that adaptive units are displayed correctly and don't affect the user's impression of the website, please follow these recommendations:

  • Place adaptive ads where they're less likely to offset content:

    • Don't place adaptive ads on the first screen. If you have to, place it at the bottom of the screen, so that the ad unit ends outside the viewable area. We recommend placing adaptive units on the second and subsequent screens.
    • Don't add adaptive ads above the page header. Use fixed containers in these cases instead.
  • An adaptive unit's width should match the width of the content in the website layout (please note that the width of the content in the website layout should be close to 100%).
  • Do not use a fixed height for adaptive units. Set the maximum height max-height in the unit code to at least 70 vh and no more than 90 vh. This will help you to avoid issues that happen when the height of an adaptive ad exceeds the screen size or is too small for large displays. Learn more about unit height restrictions.
  • Add placeholders. A placeholder is a container inside an ad unit meant to take up space in the layout until the adaptive ad is displayed. Add your placeholders to the ad code so that their locations are preset. The recommended height for a placeholder is calculated via the formula: max-height of an ad unit × 0.9. This will help you avoid offsetting content as an adaptive ad loads as well as minimize the ad's impact on your website's CLS.
Example of the code for an adaptive ad with a placeholder
<!-- Yandex.RTB R-I-677833-1 an adaptive unit with the maximum height -->
    <div id="yandex_rtb_R-I-677833-1" style="max-height: 80vh;">
      <!-- a placeholder -->
      <div style="height: 72vh;"></div>
        renderTo: 'yandex_rtb_R-I-677833-1',
        blockId: 'R-I-677833-1'
    }) })</script>
The placeholder design can be customized to your website so that the its background blends in with your website's design until the ad loads.
Adaptive format settings

Are used to set the maximum number of ads in the unit. The maximum number of ads depends on the selected format and version of the website.

If there's more than one ad in a unit, you can specify their position:

  • Auto: Automatically based on the container size.
  • From left to right: For horizontal containers.
  • From top to bottom: For vertical containers.

In mobile website versions and Turbo pages, if a unit has more than two ads and the left-to-right position is configured, the ads will be displayed in a carousel. But if the unit height is less then 200 pixels, only one ad will be displayed.

Colors and Fill colors

Use them to set up background color in Adaptive  ad units.

Size and placement

Are used to to set the width and height.

Floor Ad units in the mobile version of the website have the default height set to 15% of the screen width. You can set a custom height, but it can't be less than 50 pixels. If the selected height exceeds 30% of the screen height at the time of impression on the device, it's automatically reduced to 30%.

Note. We do not recommend fixing the unit size: this limits the number of available designs, and it will be more difficult for Smart Design technology to choose a design that will suit a particular user.

Display method

Show in Interscroller: Ads appear smoothly from under the content when scrolling and hide under it using the parallax effect.

Note. The parallax effect in a unit is achieved by the CSS position: fixed property. Therefore, for the effect to apply correctly to any of the parent elements in the banner, do not use the transform, perspective, or filter properties. Learn more about position:fixed in CSS.

Billboard is one of the Adaptive format display options. It is a large animated text and image banner with a single ad. The animation draws attention to the banner and makes it more informative by changing different ad elements.

The set of ad elements, their color, and background color are selected automatically using Smart Design technology to match the color scheme of the image.

How to add to a unit

In the Yandex Advertising Network interface, select the desktop version of the website, add the Adaptive  format, and in the the Main section under the format settings, set the Maximum number of ads to 1.

Display conditions
  • The minimum container size for rendering Adaptive  units as a billboard is 700 × 180 pixels.
  • The billboard is displayed only in the desktop version of the website. The mobile version of the website will show the standard Adaptive format display option.
Placement recommendations

The recommended place for the billboard is above or under the site header.

The billboard can be combined with display ads, video ads, and the direct sale of large formats. You can configure display and video ads in the Yandex Advertising Network interface. To learn more about how to set up direct sales in Adfox, see Adfox Support.

Fullscreen Smart Design

Restriction. This format is only available for the mobile version of the website with the Fullscreen unit type.

The Fullscreen  format contains text and image ads that are displayed on the entire screen of the device. The user can close the ad at any time.

The ad design is generated automatically using Smart Design technology. The technology determines which ad is more likely to attract the user's attention and builds it from the available modules.
