Turbo mode

What is Turbo mode?

Turbo is a mode that is activated when the internet connection is slow in the browser (it is based on Opera Turbo technology from Opera Software). This helps speed up page loading and save your traffic. Pages load faster because the amount of data is reduced. Page contents are compressed on Yandex servers before sending them to the browser, and "heavy" page elements (such as multimedia) are not loaded at all.

When Turbo mode is activated, the Turbo icon appears in the right part of the title bar.

Restriction. However, Turbo mode is not applied to pages that are secured using the HTTPS protocol: these pages do not pass through Yandex servers, and are displayed directly in your browser.

Automatically enabling and disabling Turbo mode

There are two thresholds that provide smooth automatic activation and deactivation of Turbo mode:

  • If the connection speed falls below 128 Kbit/s, Turbo mode is activated. When the speed increases, it remains on until the speed exceeds 512 Kbit/s.
  • If the connection speed reaches 512 Kbit/s or higher, Turbo mode is deactivated automatically and the icon disappears. If the connection speed falls below 512 Kbit/s after this, Turbo mode stays off until the speed decreases to 128 Kbit/s.

Restriction.  You cannot customize the thresholds for activating and deactivating Turbo mode.

What happens when Turbo mode is activated?

When Turbo mode is on, the browser hides certain website elements, including multimedia. A placeholder is shown instead: To load the hidden content, click the placeholder. To load all hidden page elements, click the Turbo icon
