# Set up hints on the route
As you move along your route, the app gives you voice hints. The hint priority is as follows:
1. **Exit numbering**.
*Example:* "in 700 meters, take the second exit and turn right".
2. **Directional indicators**.
*Example:* "in 500 meters, keep right toward the airport".
3. **[Landmarks](*landmarks) and organizations**.
*Example:* "turn left, then drive under the overpass" or "after the gas station, turn right".
Organizations are announced by their business type or name, if they are part of large, well-known chains.
4. **Street names**.
*Example:* "turn left onto Bratislavskaya Street".
## Enable background navigation {#background}
Yandex Navigator can run in the background, giving you directions and hints even when the app is collapsed or your device screen is off. To enable background navigation:
1.
Tap ** (profile picture)**. If you're not logged in, tap .
1.
Tap **Settings** → **Navigation**.
1. Turn the **Background navigation** option on or off.
If your system and app languages are different, background notifications will appear in the app's language.

1. Open your device settings.
1. In the list of apps, select **Yandex Navigator**.
1. Tap **Notifications**.
1. Enable **Background navigation**.

### Background navigation instructions {#background-tips}

Turn notifications can be displayed when the app is in the background. To enable background navigation instructions:
1.
Tap ** (profile picture)**. If you're not logged in, tap .
1.
Tap **Settings** → **Navigation**.
1. Enable **Background navigation instructions**.

## Alternative routes {#alt-road}
Yandex Navigator can suggest alternative routes that may have the same travel time.
To see alternative routes to your selected map point:
1.
Tap ** (profile picture)**. If you're not logged in, tap .
1.
Tap **Settings** → **Navigation**.
1. Enable **Alternative routes**.
This setting doesn't affect the display of [faster routes](https://yandex.com/support/navigator/en/route-movement.md). When following a route, Yandex Navigator will continue to show faster routes, even if the **Alternative routes** option is enabled.
[*landmarks]: Landmarks are distinctive, clearly visible, stationary objects or terrain features, such as overpasses, railway bridges, tunnels, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, alternate roads, and the like.
