Activate navigation

Navigation provides visual and audio guidance. It needs the app to be active or running in the background mode.

Tap the Go! button to activate step-by-step navigation along the route you set.

To navigate without setting a route, turn on the Settings → Background navigation → When driving freely option (see Background navigation).

Visual tracking

The app shows:

  • The current route segment.

To view the entire route, tap the Full view button.

To return to the current section, tap the Map button.

The following icons mark the key route points:

    • — Current location of your car as you drive along the route.
    • — Starting point.
    • Waypoint.
    • — Points in the middle of the segments between the waypoints. You can drag these points to reset the route to a new position.
    • — Destination.
  • Route parameters:

    • — Distance to the destination and estimated time of arrival.
    • Amount of traffic along the route.
    • — Upcoming turns, including the type of turn and distance to it.
    • — Speed limit along a route section (if you need to correct it, tap the icon):

  • Number of lanes: shown in the popup for the current location. Lanes that you can take on your route are shown white against a black background and those you can't take are gray.

The popup in the image means that you should use the two left lanes that are highlighted for that point on your route.

    Attention.

If the North is always up option is on (see the Navigator map section), the number of lanes isn't shown when moving along the route.

In the current version of the app, lane directions are shown in some large cities, when making complex turns and at intersections, and on straight sections of road when it is important for the driver to choose certain lanes in order to stay on the route.

    Lane designations may include icons:

    •  ─ Lanes for public transport. If the driver is allowed to use these lanes in the current situation (for example, to turn right from the rightmost lane), a white arrow will be shown to indicate that this lane can be used by cars.
    • If it is not recommended that the driver use this lane, then a gray arrow will be shown with a warning icon:
    •  ─ Tram tracks.
    • If the arrow displays with a white T icon, it means that cars can use the tram lane. If the arrow is gray or there is no arrow (only the letter Т is shown), then cars should not use the tram lane.
    •  ─ Taxi lanes (in places where such dedicated lanes exist).
    •  ─ Bike lanes. Cars may never travel in these lanes.

    • The default language is the default language that has been set for the particular location, such as Turkish in Turkey.

      Note.

  5. Select Speaker and choose a name.

  6. To set up voice-activated control in the program so you can use voice commands while navigating, enable the Voice activation option.

Speeding alerts

To configure speeding messages, select Warnings → About speed limits.

On the page that opens, use the slider to set the value above the speed limit (in km/h) that will trigger a warning.

Navigator will warn you when you exceed the speed limit by the amount that you have set.

Road alerts

See Road alerts for how to turn on/off or adjust road alerts:

Route changes

To change your route, you can set waypoints along the way.

Additionally, the app includes a function that lets you re-route your trip. Yandex.Navigator will tell you about alternative routes if the following two circumstances apply:

  1. If the new route is at least 5 minutes faster than the current one.

  2. If there is no more than 10 minutes (otherwise the road situation may change) but not less than 1 minute (so that the driver has enough time to make a decision, such as, for example, plotting a new route) until the next turn.

You can choose a new route by tapping Full view when it shows a new route notification: .

Routes to parking

When you are approaching the final point on your route, you will be able to plot a route to the nearest parking space.

You can enable automatic routing to the parking space that is closest to the end point on your route in one of three ways (see the Plot a parking route section).

Background navigation

Yandex.Navigator can navigate while running in the background (showing warnings even if the app isn't active) in two modes:

Background navigation when moving along the route
  1. Tap Menu .

  2. Go to Settings → Background navigation.

  3. Turn on When following routes.

Background navigation without setting a route
  1. Tap Menu .

  2. Go to Settings → Background navigation.

  3. Turn on When driving freely.

The background navigation is turned on automatically when the app detects that you are moving faster than 15 km/h.

You can turn on both modes or one of them.
