# Data segmentation

Yandex Metrica [collects and processes a large volume](https://yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/how-it-works.md) of information about site users. For certain business cases, sometimes you need to get a subset of data from this large dataset.

In addition to selecting user sessions for a specific action (such as viewing a specific page or click-throughs from a particular source), Yandex Metrica lets you select user parameters such as gender, age, and so on.

It may also be important to get statistics on users who performed a certain action in the past, and analyze the connection between past and present behavior. 

The data that Yandex Metrica uses for making a report like this can be shown as follows:

To build a report with just the data you are looking for, [create a segment](https://yandex.com/support/metrica/en/general/segmentation-report.md) with the relevant conditions.

Segments can be created not only in the web interface but also using the [Yandex Metrica API](https://tech.yandex.com/metrika/). Each of these ways allows creating up to 500 segments. This means that you can have a total of up to 1000 segments per tag.

When working with segments, keep in mind:

- Segments created in the web interface can be used in [Yandex Direct](https://yandex.com/support/direct/impression-criteria/retargeting-lists.html) and [Yandex Audience](https://yandex.com/support/audience/segments/segment-new.html).
- Segments created via the API can only be used for retargeting in Yandex Direct. They are not shown in the Yandex Metrica web interface.
- In some cases, a segment created in one of the Yandex Metrica reports does not work in another report or is not available in Yandex Direct and Yandex Audience. For example, you can't use a segment created in a [Yandex Direct, costs](https://yandex.com/support/metrica/en/sources/direct-clicks.md) report in any other report, nor can you use it when selecting an audience in Yandex Direct.
