Audio and video calls

Calls are available in chats with one person:

  • In the Yandex.Chats app for Android 6.0 devices.
  • In the Yandex.Chats app for devices with iOS 10.0 and higher.
  • In the Yandex.Chats app for PCs running Windows and macOS.
  • In the Yandex.Chats web version for PC: in Yandex Browser, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox.

Selecting a device for audio and video

As an audio device for making calls, you can use the built-in speaker, speakerphone, a wireless headset, or headphones. For video calls, you can switch between the rear and front-facing cameras. To learn more, see Managing calls.

Microphone and camera access

The first time you try to place a call or accept an incoming call, the app requests access to the device's microphone and camera if it's a video call. You can allow access immediately in the request or later in the app settings.

Note. Mobile device manufacturers can change the Android interface. Below are instructions for Android without modifications.
  1. Open the device settings.
  2. Tap Apps & notificationsApp permissionsShow all apps.
  3. In the list of apps, select Yandex.Chats.
  4. Tap Permissions.
  5. Activate the Camera and Microphone options.

How to make a call

You can make a call in one of the following ways:

  • In the chat list, long tap the chat card. In the menu that appears, select Call or Video call.
  • Open a private chat and tap at the top.
  • On the chat screen, tap the message with the call status (for example, if you missed the call).
  • In the chat, tap Contact information and select Call or Video call.

To accept an incoming call, click . To end or reject a call, click .

Managing calls

Element Action

The microphone is disabled. Tap to enable it.

The microphone is enabled. Tap to disable it.

Video is disabled. Tap to enable it.

Video is enabled. Tap to disable it.

Selecting a camera. Tap to switch between the rear and front-facing camera.

Minimize the call window to open the chat with that person. To return to full-screen mode, tap the minimized call window or the Go back to call link.

Speakerphone is disabled. Tap it to enable speakerphone or switch audio to headphones.

Speakerphone is enabled. Tap it to switch audio to your mobile device's speaker or headphones.

Audio is transmitted to wireless headphones. Tap it to switch audio to your mobile device's speaker or to enable speakerphone.

“Picture-in-picture” mode

Note. This mode is available in the app on devices with Android 8.0 and higher.

In “picture-in-picture (PIP)” mode, you can place the small-sized call window on top of other apps. You can drag it across the screen to a convenient spot. “Picture-in-picture” mode is enabled by default.

  1. If the call window is minimized, open it in full-screen mode (tap ).
  2. Tap Home on your device.

To close the call window in PIP mode, tap in the upper-right corner.

To return to full-screen mode, tap the minimized call window or the Go back to call link.

Disable PIP mode for Yandex.Chats
  1. Open the device settings.
  2. Go to Apps & notifications.
  3. Choose Special app accessPicture-in-pictureYandex.Chats.
