Changes and additions to the Mapping Rules

This section contains information about changes and additions to the Mapping Rules and other sections of the Yandex Map Editor help.

2025.06.06

• Road speed limits section updates:

  • U-turns and road sections allowing U-turns within a single road now count as intersections when they include stop lines and traffic lights.

  • When a one-lane road (class 1-7) intersects with one lane of a two-lane road, that location also counts as an intersection for the second lane.

    See 3.3.2.8.1.

  • Speed limits on speed bumps combined with pedestrian crossings now have specific marking rules.

    See 3.3.2.8.5.

• Caption naming rules for Locations now specify: for items that aren't organizations or are supporting infrastructure within an organization's territory, use only the item's name in the official name — exclude the parent organization's name.

  See 3.6.2.1.4.2.2.

• Parking lot drawing and attribution rules now specify: never draw prohibited parking between dual-lane road sections.

• Organization naming rules updated: names appearing entirely in capital letters on signs should follow standard language conventions (first word capitalized, remaining words lowercase). However, at the owner's request, we may use a name that's not written in accordance with language rules (such as each word capitalized, even though only the first word should be capitalized, according to the rules).

• Natural object naming rules clarified for Russia and ex-Soviet countries map captions. If the name of a park or square consists of a proper name and words that describe its type in more details, the describing words are omitted.

  See 3.3.3.2.8.

• Speed table with auto-assigned values now includes Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, and Venezuela.

  See 3.6.2.1.4.1.

• Maneuver rules updated:

  • Prohibited maneuvers now apply to technical restrictions where dual-lane roads merge into single-lane roads (when U-turns are prohibited by traffic regulations).
  • Roundabout technical restrictions require prohibiting signs or road markings on the ground.

• Road attribution rule changes:

  • Speed limit rules now define what constitutes an intersection in Russia for determining speed limit sign start and end points.
  • When a speed limit sign applies up to a point within an intersection, the limit extends to the road intersection point.
  • Speed limits are marked either from road intersections or from the speed limit sign, depending on specific conditions.
  • On dual-lane roads, class 7 connectors formed by class 8 roads inherit the dual-lane road's speed limit.
  • Speed bump speed limit rules apply only to limits of 30 km/h or lower.
  • For speed bumps immediately after intersections on dual-direction roads, speed limits apply from intersection to sign, then 20 meters beyond the sign away from the intersection.

• Map scale information added to Working with the map section: view scale in the map URL or lower-right corner.

• Removed incorrect enterprise legal form examples from English organization naming rules.

• Maneuver drawing rules:

  • For complex checkpoints (adjacent boom gates, boom gate plus gate, and so on), create entry restrictions at the first obstacle encountered when entering.
  • Added an example of drawing a maneuver in a restricted area.

  See 3.3.4.2.7, 3.3.4.2.8.

• Indoor map rules:

  • Locations and indoor areas category items must be aligned with each other.
  • Functional zone boundaries must follow the external boundaries of surrounding areas. When no surrounding areas border the functional zone, draw the boundary locally using the map of the area or other available information.
  • Large flower bed areas should be drawn as service areas.

  See 3.18.1.3.1, 3.18.1.3.10, 3.18.1.7, 3.18.2.3.

• Major Classification overhaul: removed categories, updated descriptions and names.

2025.04.14

• Clarified that high-detail attributes can't be added for the polygons of free-standing plants (both trees and shrubs).

• Updated the wording for drawing one-way roads in Türkiye.

  One-way traffic is assigned to class 7 roads if there are road signs on the ground that restrict entry or turns to this road from one of the sides.

• For Colombia and Peru, specified that one-way traffic is assigned to class 7 roads if there are road signs on the ground that restrict entry or turns to this road from one of the sides.

• For Colombia, specified that one-way traffic signs can also be placed on building facades, in addition to standard placement options.

• Updated the wording for naming address points of corner buildings.

  When specifying the official name of an address point, you should opt for the variant used locally. Other variants (if any) should be set as the Also known as, historical name type.

• Added paragraph 3.18.1.3.10 that describes the rules for drawing indoor areas. Clarified that fountain basins should be drawn as facilities of the Staff type.

• Excluded the outdated clarification that if an organization has multiple signs, the organization's placemark should be located at its main entrance.

• Specified that items on the map are drawn and attributed based on the actual situation on the ground.

  If the situation on the ground differs from what's shown in the Map Editor, draw without taking what was previously drawn into account. Identified several types of items as exceptions to this rule.

• Roads of class 8 were added to the list of one-lane roads that can intersect vegetation items.

  See 3.3.1.1.8, 3.9.1.5.

• Clarified that, when creating and editing shapes, it's required to place address points within the boundaries of buildings and consider the actual situation on the ground. If possible, try making sure that the polygon of the building (for which an address point is being created or edited) matches the shape of the building on the ground.

• In many sections of the rules, replaced the requirement to coordinate layers with each other with a recommendation to do so.

2025.03.28

• Allowed to assign the Locations category to residential complexes. The residential complex was added to the examples of organizations that occupy an area.

• Clarified that railway crossings are drawn at the intersections of railways with roads (previously with the road network).

  See 3.8.6.

• Corrected the image in the rules for assigning accessibility for pedestrians to roads.

• For Colombia, clarified that address points should be located behind the entrance to buildings, closer to the edge, if the location of the entrance assigned to this address is known.

• Clarified that if the address point is placed at the center of a building's footprint and overlaps with an item of the Locations category, then you need to shift the item of the Locations category (not the address point) from the center to eliminate the overlap.

• Allowed to include road sections in several Street in locality type items when these streets don't completely overlap.

  If these streets are linked to the same locality, overlap each other at least partially, and differ by name (for example, Luzhniki St. and Novoluzhnetsky Ln. in Moscow), then each street should be a separate item with its own official name. Don't enter a caption name on the map.

• Removed the clarification that if there are signs along class 7 roads and above in restricted areas, parking bays can be drawn as places.

• Added a new rule for naming long avenues with two names in Colombia.

  See 4.10.2.2.

• Specified that the rule of road connectivity is fundamental, and all edits to the road network should be made with this rule in mind.

  See 3.3.2.1.

• Specified in paragraph 4.1.2.2.3.1.2 that the Caption name is not set when both the type and the proper name of the item are abbreviations. The note to paragraph 4.1.2.2.3.1.3 no longer lists the shortened form for коллективный сад as an acceptable entry for caption names. The коллективный сад type should be abbreviated as КС (a common abbreviation) and is not included in the caption name (the same applies to "СНТ" and similar abbreviations).

• Added one more condition under which one-way traffic can be assigned to class 8 roads when there are no one-way traffic signs:

  • Traffic spikes that only work for entry or exit from an area (on the ground, such spikes may be accompanied by signs like No entry and their equivalents, as well as warning plates).

• Added two new rules for roads in Türkiye:

  • 4.4.4.7: To assign one-way traffic for class 7 roads, it's enough to have traffic signs on the ground that prohibit entry and turns onto this road.
  • 4.4.4.8: No-turn signs located immediately after an intersection prohibit the specified turn at that intersection.

• Added new rules for placing organizations in a building.

  See 3.6.1.2.

• Added the name Food production for unnamed items from category 14.9.8.Food manufacturers.

• Described the priorities for placing organizations in buildings.

  • Organizations that serve as architectural landmarks in the area are placed in the center of the building.
  • For organizations that have their own territory, you can set the POI at the center of the territory only if there are no buildings on this territory.
  • If an organization doesn't have a sign but occupies the entire building, you can place it in the center of the building.
  • Added an example of a branded space with a store building and cash registers on the territory of a fuel station.

• Clarified that speed limits should be set in accordance with traffic regulations, signs, and road markings. Added examples that now include sections about the road signs indicating the beginning and end of a locality and the speed limit sign immediately after an intersection.

• Removed all rules for assigning captions from the general rules for assigning names and the general rules for assigning names in Russia, leaving only the following: Only enter names of the "Caption" type when it is explicitly required by the naming rules for the layer in question..

• Added a new paragraph that clarifies that, in the name for the caption, item types consisting of multiple words should be abbreviated.

• Explicitly clarified that accessibility for cyclists is enabled for roads of classes 6–9 and can be disabled for sidewalks running parallel to these roads in accordance with traffic regulations.

• Added that E is transcribed as ye if it follows a soft sign, and ь is transcribed as y if it precedes и.

• Clarified that unofficial streets can't be mapped neither on road sections that are part of official streets, nor on road sections that are part of other roads.

• Clarified the rules for drawing parallel parking: only the part of the parking lane that's parallel to the main course of the road should be drawn; extensions of the roadway before the intersection are included in the parking.

• Specified that ferry crossings can be connected to the remaining road network by class 7 (and higher) roads.

• Added examples of drawing traffic lights at intersections with stop lines.

• Added a note that the parent item for addresses of buildings with proper names is determined in the same way as the parent item for standard addresses.

• The Rules for drawing organization placemarks stipulate that you should draw placemarks of organizations build in the building walls (ATMs, water dispensers, and others) within the building polygons.

  See 3.6.1.2.

• Described the cases in which address points must be located within administrative divisions.

  Addresses must be located within the boundaries of administrative divisions if:

  • An administrative division is a parent item for the address.
  • A parent item for the address (for example, a street) is located inside an administrate division.

  This rule doesn't apply when the address is located outside the boundaries of an administrate division, and it's confirmed by the official documents.

• Specified that, unless otherwise specified in the rules for a particular road type or country, a road should be linked to level 4 (or higher) administrative division that fully covers it.

  See 3.3.3.1.6.

• Updated the wording In the Rules for regional mapping for Russia and ex-Soviet countries, updated the wording — added equivalent names for municipalities outside Russia and municipal districts in Russia:

  • If there is no data for the urban or rural settlements, you can also enter the municipalities and equivalent administrative divisions outside Russia (level 3) as the parent divisions for locality items in the administrative division category (level 4).
  • However, city and municipal districts in Russia and city akimats (administrations) in Kazakhstan (level 3) cannot be parent divisions for other items that are at the same level.

  Updated the list of districts that belong to District (level 3).

• Expressly stated in the points for roads and administrative division units of the Rules for regional mapping for Russia and ex-Soviet countries that if the full name is unknown, only the first letter of the name is used.

• Removed the requirement that in order to draw awnings and canopies, there must be no road sections under them.

2025.02.14

• Clarified that the beginning and ending points for the road sections passing over bridges should be set based on expansion joints, and when expansion joints are not visible ─ in the points where the bridge connects to the ground. When drawing bridges or roads passing over bridges, the borders of these items can only be aligned with each other and with the borders of the HD roadbed when all these items are properly drawn, have attributes added according to the rules, and there are no or minimal discrepancies between them.

• Updated the description of category 4.9.3. Brokerage firm.

• Specified that if a road section has already been assigned a speed limit value according to the traffic regulations and it differs from the table value, changing this value to a value from the table is considered an error.

• In the Yandex Business block, changed one of the values of the Accessible by wheelchair attribute group: the partially accessible value was changed to fully accessible for the Building entrance attribute.

• Specified in the naming rules for administrative divisions in Russia that quotes can be used in the name if they are used in that name in the State Catalogue of Geographical Names.

  The Catalogue fully regulates the name format (for Official and Caption names): word order, capitalization, the usage of the letter ё, brackets, quotes, and so on.

• Specified that the building additional detail is not omitted before the house number on the territory of Russia and ex-Soviet countries.

  If the address starts with an additional detail, it is omitted except in the following cases:

  • Omitting it creates a duplicate address.
  • There's a letter designation after it.
  • It refers to an internal address at a cemetery.
  • The корпус detail is specified before the house number.

• Specified that In Peru, the abbreviation "Jr." can be seen on address plates and street signs: it is an abbreviation of the "Jirón" street type.

• Specified that if a chain organization uses the name of the parent organization more actively than the name of the child organization, the name of the parent organization should be entered as the caption name.

• Removed the inconsistency in the rules for drawing linear parking spots when there are linear parking signs.

  Always draw linear parking areas, even if there is a linear parking sign, except for cases described in section 3.8.2.3.5.

• Added ferries and ice crossings to the examples of roads with the Toll attribute.

  The Yes attribute value (check the box) is assigned to toll road sections (such as toll roads, toll ferry and ice crossings). For all other road sections, the attribute value is set to No (don't check the box).

• Specified that numbers in street names should be entered as ordinals in unofficial administrative divisions.

• Specified that if the country is divided into municipalities, streets are linked to municipalities and long streets passing through several municipalities are linked to higher-level administrative divisions.

• The rules for the countries of the Arabian Peninsula now state that long streets that span several municipalities are drawn as different streets within each of these municipalities and are linked to them.

• In Peru, you can draw pedestrian paths across car roads regardless of how many lanes they have.

  In places where a pedestrian path approaches a car road (both outside intersections and at them) and there's no pedestrian crossing, you can draw their crossing regardless of the presence of a solid center line marking and the number of lanes on the car road being crossed.

• Specified that you can draw traffic lights with a single signal at intersections.

  See 3.8.4.1.1.

• For Russia and the countries of the former USSR, described the rules for captioning mountains that have proper names in the genitive case.

• Described the sources for finding information about toll roads.

  If there's no information about toll sections in the official documents, map such sections using (in descending order of priority):

  • News sources and websites of the toll road in question, or websites of the owners of these toll roads.
  • Road signs in the area.
  • Other information found (that would be an approximate mapping).

  • When two or more administrative divisions in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, or Kyrgyzstan have completely identical names, and it's impossible to associate them with different parent map items because the official sources don't contain this information (nor any other information that would justify making these administrative divisions unique).
  • When the proper name of the administrative division is unknown (for example, in the case of garden plots).

• Described the rules for specifying apartment ranges that include a multi-floor apartment.

  For multi-floor apartments, the apartment number in the floor range should be indicated at the entrance floor. If you don't know the entrance floor, enter the number at the lowest of the floors occupied by the apartment.

• Clarified the rules for naming natural features in Russia: if an item has a proper name, the type of the feature is always included in the official name. • Clarified that vegetation can be added to any area of highly detailed maps where the editor allows such edits.

• Described the regional features for placing speed limit signs in Türkiye.

  Speed limit signs that are installed on the right side of the roadway before additional lanes for exiting the main road and aren't duplicated on the left side of the road apply only to those road sections and don't extend to the main road.

• Clarified the rules for displaying alleys and avenues on the map.

  • Alleys and avenues that are located in named parks or squares and mentioned in official documents are shown as Street in locality items in the Roads layer.
  • Named alleys and avenues that aren't officially recognized as city streets but occupy a defined territory and appear as vegetation items in documents or news sources, are shown as Park, square items in the Vegetation layer.
  • Alleys and groves that aren't officially recognized and aren't mapped in the Vegetation and Roads layers, but are deemed well-known landmarks, are shown as Nature items in the Locations layer.

• Updated the rules for assigning the Exit attribute.

  It is now expressly stated that you shouldn't assign the Exit attribute to road sections that allow traffic in more than one direction.

  For level 2 (Region) and level 3 (District) states, departments, municipalities, and provinces, don't include the type in the caption name.

  The paragraph describes the region's addressing features and the rules for placing address points inside buildings.

  In countries that are divided into municipalities, specify the population size in the municipality item attributes. Duplicating this information in the level 4 place card (Locality) is also acceptable.

• Allowed drawing luggage storage for all items that have an Indoor map, not just those related to transportation.

• Clarified the rules for drawing organization placemarks according to signs.

  In memorial names that consist of a first and last name, a title and last name, or a profession and last name, write out the first name, title, and profession in full, before other name elements.

  If the full first name is unknown, then you may use the initial.

  A proper name without the type is used for places in the hydrography and terrain categories.

  When drawing pedestrian crossings, you can either highlight short road sections that connect the crossing to the road network but aren't actually part of the crossing, or include them in the pedestrian crossing.

• Clarified the rules describing numbered highways.

  The Numbered highway road type is assigned to roads of the following significance:

  • International highways.
  • National highways.
  • Roads of regional and inter-municipal significance (or roads of similar significance outside the Russian Federation).

  Don't map roads of lower significance (for example, local roads in the Russian Federation or rural roads in Ukraine).

  If the Yandex Map Editor rules allow mapping local roads for a specific country, link them to second-level (Region) administrative divisions rather than to districts or settlements (even if the road is entirely contained within the latter).

• Specified the rules for naming graffiti and murals.

• Specified the rules for assigning the Under the road attribute for buildings.

  The attribute is added in the following cases:

  • The building is under a structure on which the road is located (for example, a building under a bridge, elevated pedestrian crossing, and so on).
  • The building is a stylobate through which roads pass.

• Clarified the rules for drawing stairs.

  When drawing stairs divided by flights, the Stairs type is assigned only to the sections where they are actually located (but drawing without dividing into stairs and flights is also allowed).

• Updated the rules for setting technical restrictions in the road network.

  If one or more sections of a road don't have a pavement, don't set a technical restriction.

• Clarified that you can use addresses for addresses containing proper names.

  See 3.5.2.2.3.

• Updated the rules for drawing named exits on the map.

  If the exact geometry of the exit is not known from official documents, the exit is named from its beginning to the intersection with a class 7 road (and higher).

  Two or more exits with the same name located within the same locality are marked as a single item on the map.

  See 3.3.3.2.7.

• Clarified that if a road sign is installed immediately after an intersection, then the corresponding attribute on the map is set starting from the intersection of the road network at this intersection.

  There's no need to additionally split the network lines in the place where the sign is installed.

  See 3.3.2.8..

• Specified that sections of the road network at T-intersections should preferably be connected at right angles, but drawing without following this rule is also acceptable.

  See 3.3.1.5.3.5.

• Clarified the rules for attributing addresses in Türkiye.

  The term Nolu in the name replaces the period. For example, 120300 Nolu Sok.

  See 4.4.4.4.

• Specified that buildings that have the same number of stories and are located wall to wall with a gap of less than three meters between them can be drawn as a single polygon.

  For example, such structures may include garages in a garage cooperative.
