3.12.4. Platform walkway

Platform walkways in Yandex Map Editor are composite lines that are not drawn on the map, but rather compiled from one or more road sections, each drawn individually and assigned attributes separately (for more information, see 3.3.2. Attribution rules of sections).

3.12.4.1. Drawing platform walkways

Platform walkways for railway platforms should be drawn only if the platform has a number, name, or another ID (see 3.12.2. Rules for adding attributes to railway items).

Alert

For unnamed railway platforms, mark only polygonal items (see 3.12.1.3. Rules for drawing railway platforms)

Alert

Platform walkways are marked only on railway platforms (including platforms on narrow-gauge and children's railway lines).

Do not use this type to mark platforms of metro stations, including ground-level and elevated stations.

Add all road sections related to a specific platform to the Platform walkway. The item must not be split if the platform is actually continuous and has no structural breaks, branches, and duplications (for example, the direction to the entrance to the platform and the direction to the exit from the platform are drawn in parallel). Mark each platform with a single line spanning the entire platform from the beginning to the end, following the geometric center of the platform.

Set the beginning and end of the platform either by its actual beginning/end (if the platform doesn't share parts with other platforms):

Or at the point where the track arrangement adjacent to the platform begins/ends.

Don't include road sections that mark platform entrances (for example, pedestrian footways), turnstiles, stairs, ramps to underground crossings, and connecting sections with stairs and crossings in a Platform walkway, except when such sections connect one part of the platform to another (due to structural features when you can access a remote part of the platform via stairs/turnstiles).

The red arrows below show which road sections you shouldn't include in the item, because the pedestrian crossing with stairs leads to other platforms.

If a named railway platform is merged with another one, the Platform walkways may be joined.

Platform walkways must not be overlaped — each road network section must belong only to one Platform walkway.

3.12.4.2 Adding attributes to platform walkways

If a railway platform has a number, name, or another ID, this information must be added both in the road network (Platform walkway) and in polygonal items of the Railway platform type (see 3.12.2.3. Rules for adding attributes to railway platforms).

Information about the name of the same platform in Platform walkway and in Railway platform polygons type may differ.

You can create a new Platfrom walkway in the Transport section of the Create menu.

When creating it, enter the item name.

In Platform walkway, you can specify the following information as a name for railway platforms:

  • Platform number (for example, Platform 3, Platform 3A).
  • Numbers of platform tracks if this information is used in station navigation (for example, Track 22, Track 22A).
  • Boarding area names and other platform zoning if it is used in station navigation (for example, Area A).
  • Proper names of platforms (for example, Fryazinskaya platform).
  • Train type names if the platform is exclusively used for a specific type of trains (Aeroexpress, MCD, Sapsan) and if there are other platforms at the station.
  • Names of directions to the largest city if they are commonly used (for example, To Moscow, From Moscow).
  • Other platform IDs used in navigation if there is no platform and/or track number.

You can use a combination of different ID types from the list above in the Platform walkway name. If you combine IDs, separate them with a hyphen.

Examples:

  • Platform 3 - Track 5, 6
  • Platform 2 - Sapsan - Area А
  • Platform 4 - Fryazinskaya platform
  • Platform 1 - To Moscow
  • Track 1 - From Moscow
  • Track 1 - From Moscow, Track 2 - To Moscow (used for island platforms)

If the mapping rules permit that two parallel pedestrian paths can be drawn on the platform (for example, when they bypass a structure on the platform), you can create separate Platform walkways for each of these parallel paths to indicate a specific track direction on each of them.

Alert

Follow the station navigation principles to combine different ID types. Avoid overcluttering the Platform walkway name with information that is actually known but not used in navigation, including technical information.

Specifying the platform number always takes priority (including in combination with other IDs). If the platform number exists and is known, specify it. For example, don't use the name Track 5, 6 without a platform number for platform No. 3 that serves tracks 5 and 6.

Don't include that a platform is affiliated with a station or terminal in platform names (for example, don't write platform 1 of the Kazansky railway terminal).

In select cases, employees can name a Platform walkway in combination with other IDs and different formats of writing and/or combining names to better reflect local conventions for naming railway items.
