Changing from POP3 to IMAP

The popular POP3 email protocol is sometimes regarded as inconvenient because of the following shortcomings:

  • the folder list is not synchronized between the email client and the server;
  • email is only connected to one device – you cannot work with emails from your computer and mobile phone at the same time.

If you switch your email client from POP3 to IMAP, you will be able to handle your emails using your email client, a browser and a mobile app at the same time. In this case your emails will not be marked as read and will not disappear from the Yandex.Mail server.

To change from POP3 to IMAP:

  1. Create an account that uses IMAP in the email program where you have a POP3 account. When creating a new account, use the same username and password which you use for your POP3 account.
  2. Make sure that all emails have been saved on the Yandex.Mail server. Go to the Yandex.Mail website and look through the email archive.

    If all emails are there, mark them as read. To do this, go to the Folders and Labels section, select each folder one-by-one, and click on the Mark all messages in folder as read link (to the right of the folder list).

    If any emails are missing:

    If any emails are missing on the website, but they are still in your email program, they can be uploaded to the website using the IMAP protocol. Find the emails in the email program which are not available on the website, select them in the list and drag them to the Inbox folder, or any other folder in the new account.

    Note. If there are a lot of emails, move them in groups of 30-50 emails at a time. The more emails that are moved or the more file attachments they have, the longer the upload will take. After uploading each group of emails, check on Yandex.Mail that all emails have appeared in your mailbox and then upload the next group of emails.
  3. Remove the old POP3 account.
    Attention! If you do not remove this account, the emails may be marked as read automatically – you will not receive notifications of new emails.

    Select your computer's operating system and email client for further instructions.
