Managing contacts

The address book (Contacts) is used in Mail to manage contacts. To open it, click Contacts in the top menu of Mail.

    Adding and editing a contact

    The address book is automatically created from the addresses that you have corresponded with in the past. If you want to disable automatic contact gathering, open the Settings  → Contacts menu, disable the Gather automatically option and save your changes.

    You can also add an address manually using the following methods:

    • Through the address book interface— click Add contact, fill in the fields in the contact editing dialog and save changes.
    • On the compose message page— left-click on the address and select Add to address book from the drop-down menu.

    • On the contact card, when reading messages— open the message and left-click on the sender's address. Click Add to the address book in the window that opens.
    • By importing contacts.

    If the contact name is not specified clearly and the addressee replied to you, the name which the adressee specified in his/her mail options will be entered into the address book.

    To remove a contact from the address book, open the contact editing dialog and click Remove from contacts.

    Groups of contacts

    To send messages to several contacts at one time without entering their addresses, you can group contacts and then will only need to specify the group's name in the To field.

    Adding a contact to a group

    To add a contact to a group:

    1. Select the contacts you need.
    2. Click Add to group.
    3. Select the group you need from the list or create a new one.
    Note. Contacts can be added to several groups at one time.

    Removing contacts from groups

    To remove contacts from a group:

    1. Open the group you need from the list on the left side of the page.
    2. Select the contacts you want to remove from the group.
    3. Click Remove from group.
    Attention. Contacts removed from groups will still remain in the address book. To remove a contact from the address book, click Delete contact.

    Configuring groups

    Any group can be renamed or deleted. To go to settings, click the button under the list of groups on the left side of the page. Groups of contacts can also be configured from the menu Settings  → Contacts.

    Importing and exporting contacts

    CSV format files are used to import and export contacts between address books of various email services and email clients.

    To export contacts from your Yandex.Mail address book, go to the Contacts section and click the More button in the top menu, and then select Save contacts to file. In the window that opens, select the name of the email client and interface language, and then click Save.

    All contacts from your address book will be saved to your computer in a CSV file.

    To import contacts to your Yandex.Mail address book, go to the top menu of the Contacts section and click the More button, and then select Add contacts from file. Open the needed CSV file and click Save.

    Exporting contacts from different email clients

    Microsoft Outlook 2010 and higher
    1. Open File → Open → Import.
    2. Select Export to a file and click Next.
    3. Select Comma separated values (Windows) and click Next.
    4. Select the Contacts folder for export and click Next.
    5. Enter the file name and select a path to save the file. Click Next.
    6. Click Done. The saved file can be imported to the Yandex.Mail address book or any other mail program.
    Outlook Express
    1. Open File → Export → Address Book:
    2. Select Text file (comma separated values) and click Export.
    3. Enter the file name and select a path to save the file. Click Next.
    4. Click Done. The saved file can be imported to the Yandex.Mail address book or any other mail program.
    Mozilla Thunderbird
    1. Click Address book.
    2. In the Address Book, open Tools → Export.
    3. Enter the file name, Comma separated, and select a path to save the file.
    4. Click Save. The saved file can be imported to the Yandex.Mail address book or any other mail program.
    The Bat!
    1. Open Tools → Address Book.
    2. In the Address Book, open File → Export to → Comma separated (text).
    3. Specify the file name, the type of Text (comma separated), and select a path to save the file.
    4. Set Full name and Email to Yes and click OK.

      The saved file can be imported to the Yandex.Mail address book or any other mail program.

    Restoring contacts

    If you accidentally delete important contacts, you can restore them:

    1. Click Restore in the top menu of the Contacts section.
    2. Select the backup copy from the list. The backup copy lists the date when it was created and the number of contacts in the address book at present.
    3. Click Restore contacts.

    Searching for contacts

    You can use the integrated search which supports direct and reverse transliteration of names and surnames to find a contact in your address book quickly. For example, to search for your Russian friend “Ivan Petrov”, you can start typing his name using the Latin “I” or the Cyrillic “И”.

    When composing a message, if you enter the first letters of a name, surname, or email addresses in the To field, you will see a list of matching contacts in pop-up messages. The addressees of mail you recently sent will be listed first.

    Contact card

    To view additional information about a contact, left-click on the sender's address when reading messages.

    You can manually add a telephone number, date of birth or comment to a contact card or ask the addressee to send this information. Just click Ask to send contact information.

    From the contact card, you can also view all messages you received from this sender, create a rule for all similar messages, or send the address to the blacklist.

    Social network profiles of contacts

    If your contact has profiles in social networks, you can view them in the contact card by clicking Find on the Internet.

    Mail uses information from open sources to search for profiles, for example, Facebook, LinkedIn, “Moy Krug”, “Odnoklassniki”, “Moy Mir” social services and other sites that support the ability to search images and user profiles with email addresses.
