Yandex.Disk 2.0 for Windows (beta)

The Yandex.Disk 2.0 experimental program allows you to upload files to the disk, as well as view, download and share them. With this program, files don't take up space on your computer.

You can use Yandex.Disk 2.0 in parallel with the classic version of Yandex.Disk (there is no need to delete the latter). You can only sync, take screenshots, and auto-upload photos and videos with the classic version.

Restriction.

The “Yandex.Disk” application supports the following operating systems:

  • 32-bit Windows XP Service Pack 3
  • Windows Vista;
  • Windows 7;
  • Windows 8 (classic interface)

Installation

Download the program on the Yandex.Disk 2.0 (beta) page. You will see instructions on how to run the file once it starts downloading.

A icon will appear in the Windows system tray when the installation is complete.

Logging in

Once installed, Yandex.Disk 2.0 will ask you to enter your Yandex username and password. The icon will display in the system tray until you log in.

If you don't log in right after you install the program, double-click on the program icon in the system tray.

If you still haven't registered on Yandex, click on Register to get started. Then enter the username and password in the program.

Attention. If you use two-factor authentication, you will need a one-time password, which is generated by the “Yandex.Key” app, to log in to Yandex.Disk 2.0 (beta).

Uploading files to Disk

To upload files to the Yandex.Disk, you just need to copy or move them to the program window. For example, you can open a folder and drag files into it. Or you can click Upload and select files on your computer.

Upload via drop zone

If you frequently upload new files to Yandex.Disk, drag them into the drop zone that you see on top of all windows in the lower-right corner of the screen.

To disable the drop zone, go to the Appearance menu and disable the Show drop zone on desktop menu.

You can track the file-uploading process in the Downloads section (which appears after you upload your first file or download a file from the program).

Note. If your internet connection is disrupted, your upload will be paused. When the connection is restored, the upload will resume.

To remove all completed uploads from the list, click  → Delete all completed uploads from the list.

After you upload your files, they will be on the server. You may open the Disk page to make sure that all the files have been uploaded successfully.

View and edit file

To open a file for viewing or to make changes, double-click on it in the file list. The file opens in the program that opens those type of files by default. If you want to open a file in a different program, enter that program as the default for that file type.

When you edit a file and save it, changes are automatically uploaded to Yandex.Disk. Information about the uploaded file can also be found in the Downloads section (which appears after you upload your first file or download a file from the program).

Note. Files are downloaded to a folder of temporary files and stored there for 24 hours. If you need to free up space on your computer, you can delete them: go to File → Settings and click Open temporary files folder. Before you delete them, make sure that you save your edited files.

Download file or folder

Right click on the file or folder. In the menu that appears, select Download to computer.

You can track the file-downloading process in the Downloads section (which appears after you upload your first file or download a file from the program).

This notification appears in the system tray after you download the file:

Moving files or folders

Moving files and folders is done the same way as on a computer — just drag and drop them to the desired place.

To move an item, just drag it to the appropriate place in the folder tree on the left. If you want to move an item to a subfolder, open the main folder in the tree first.

Sharing files or folders

Select an item and click Copy link above the file list.

You can also right-click on an item and choose Copy link in the menu. If you click on an empty field inside the folder, then you can copy the link to that folder.

Deleting files or folders

You can delete an item one of the following ways:

  • Drag it to the Trash icon in the folder tree on the left.
  • Right-click on the item and select Delete in the menu that opens.

To empty the Trash, right-click on the Trash icon and select Empty trash.

Problems with Yandex.Disk 2.0

Files take up space on your computer

This means that, in addition to Yandex.Disk 2.0, you have the classic Yandex.Disk installed with syncing enabled. To solve this problem, you can either set up customized syncing in the classic program or delete Yandex.Disk.

I can't change the upload-folder location.

Files are automatically saved in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\yd2_tmp folder when you upload them. Currently, it's not possible to change the upload-folder location.

The drop zone displays at the top of every window

Currently it's not possible to change the drop zone so that it doesn't display at the top of every window. However, you can disable it using one of these methods:

Method 1
Click the X in the upper-right corner of the drop zone.
Method 2
Select Appearance in the menu and disable the Show drop zone on desktop option.
