Installing the app

Download the app from disk.yandex.com/download. Once the download starts, the page will display instructions on how to launch the file (the file will launch automatically if you're using Safari).

Drag the Yandex Disk app to the Applications folder on your computer.

Log in to the application

You will be asked to enter your Yandex username and password when you first launch and set up the app. The icon in the menu bar will display an exclamation mark until you've logged in.

To log in, you can always click on the app icon in the menu bar and select Configure Yandex Disk in the menu that appears.

If you don't yet have a Yandex account, please follow the Register link to create one. Then enter your username and password.

Attention. If you use two-factor authentication or have used it before, you need a one-time password generated by the “Yandex.Key” mobile app to log in to the Yandex Disk program.

Select the Yandex Disk folder location

The Yandex Disk app automatically creates a folder that saves a copy of your Yandex Disk. You can set its location on your computer immediately after you install the app. To do so, click on Set folder location and syncing → Change and select the location you want for the Yandex Disk folder.

Note. If your computer does not have enough space for the entire Yandex Disk folder, the program will display a warning. You can set up selective syncing or choose another folder for Yandex Disk files.

If you skipped this stage, you can set up the folder location another way:

  1. Open the menu.
  2. Click .
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the Folder list, click Choose folder.

Manage files

There are two ways to upload files to Yandex Disk:

  • Drag files to the Yandex Disk icon on the menu bar.
  • Open the Disk folder in Finder (click the icon in the program menu) and copy or drag the files and folders in it.

The files will then be synced automatically. You can open your Disk page to make sure that all the files have been uploaded successfully.

You can find the latest synced files and folders in the app menu; you don't need to open the Yandex Disk folder to work with them. You can use the menu to quickly open a file, share it, drag it to a different app window, or delete it.

Any file you delete from the Yandex Disk folder will be moved to the Trash folder on the server. These files are stored in the Trash for 30 days, then they are automatically deleted from the server. Once deleted from the server, these files cannot be restored.

Attention. Files in the Trash still take up space on Yandex Disk. Empty the Trash if you're running out of space.

To empty the Trash on Disk, open the Yandex Disk folder, right-click the Trash and select Yandex Disk: Empty Trash.

How do I share a file or folder?

You can share any file or folder on your computer. If you select a file or folder that has yet to be uploaded to Yandex Disk, the app automatically uploads it to the Disk root folder on the server and copies the public link to your clipboard.

Right click the file or folder. In the menu that appears, choose the Yandex Disk: Copy public link entry.

You can also share a file or folder via the app menu:

  1. Click the Disk icon in the menu bar.
  2. Select a file from the list and click Share:

You can insert the copied link in an email, post it on social networks, and so on.

Note. You can only share the latest synced files.

How do I grant access to a folder?

Open the Yandex Disk folder and right click a folder. In the menu that appears, choose the Services → Yandex Disk: Copy public link entry.

The application will open the access settings page in your browser. On this page, you can choose who to grant access to and set their access rights. Read more in Configure shared access to a folder.

There isn't enough space on the computer for the whole Yandex Disk folder. What should I do?

To save space on your computer, you can disable syncing with the Yandex Disk server for one or more folders.

Synchronization management is only available for folders that are located directly in the Yandex Disk folder. For example, you can change synchronization settings for the Yandex Disk/Music folder, but not for the Yandex Disk/Music/Favorites subfolder.

You can also set up selective syncing the first time you launch the app to avoid downloading all the folders to your computer.

Disabling folder syncing

Attention. The folder syncing can't be turned off unless all files in it are synced (the Disk icon in the menu line has the mark).

To turn off folder syncing, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Disk icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click the icon and choose the Settings entry from the menu.
  3. Go to the Selective sync tab.
  4. Uncheck the folder that you don't want to sync.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click Delete folders from this computer in the window that appears for the changes to take effect.

Uploading to a folder with sync disabled

If you turned off folder syncing, you can upload files to this folder in the Yandex Disk settings window. Go to the Selective sync tab and drag the files to the name of the appropriate folder:

How do I set up auto-uploads?

You can automatically upload all your photos and videos from any storage media (camera, smartphone, memory card, and so on) and save them to “Camera Uploads” or any other folder in Yandex Disk.

Uploading files

Connect the device to your computer and wait for the upload window to appear:

To start the upload of photo and video files to Disk, click the Upload button. Leave the Always upload photos and videos from <device name> option turned on to start the upload automatically when you connect the device.

By default, all the photos and videos detected on your device will be uploaded to the “Camera Uploads” folder. All the files in your folder will be named according to the date and time they were taken. You can manage your photos on your computer or the Yandex Disk page in image viewing mode.

Note. If you have already configured photo and video auto-uploads from your device using the Android or iOS app or the Windows web program, the macOS app will auto-upload only new photos and videos to Yandex Disk.

If the device was disconnected from the computer during the upload and the Always upload photos and videos from <device name> option was turned on, the upload will continue automatically when the connection is back. If the option was disabled, a dialog box will appear prompting automatic downloading.

Just click Yes to stop automatically uploading photos and videos from your device. In the dialog box that appears, you can choose to stop only the current upload or enable Never upload from this device. If you enable this option, this window will not appear the next time you connect this device to your computer.

Note. Automatic photo and video uploads will even work if you're not connected to the internet. Your “Camera Uploads” folder will then sync with the Yandex Disk servers the next time you connect to the internet.

Disabling auto-uploads

  1. Disconnect the devices from your computer.
  2. Click the Disk icon in the menu bar.
  3. Click the icon and choose the Settings entry from the menu.
  4. Go to the Camera Uploads tab.
  5. Disable the Ask to upload photos and videos automatically option.
  6. Click Forget all devices.

If you no longer want files to auto-upload from a device that you previously connected to your computer, make sure the Ask to upload photos and videos automatically option is enabled and click the Forget all devices button. The next time you connect that device, a dialog box will ask you if you want to upload your files automatically.

Yandex Disk app on macOS Sierra
