# How to enable database optimization

Database optimization helps speed up Direct Commander. Optimization is enabled by default and starts automatically when you close the program.

To disable or re-enable optimization:

- Windows

  1. In the program's main menu, click **File** → **Settings**.
  
  1. Disable or enable the option **Optimize database before exiting** in the **Settings** window.
  
  1. Click **Apply**.
  

- macOS

  1. Click **Direct Commander** → **Settings**.
  
  1. Disable or enable the option **Optimize database before exiting** in the **Settings** window.
  
  1. Click **Apply**.
