Yandex.Disk 3.0 for Windows

Yandex.Disk 3.0 combines the features of the experimental Disk 2.0 and the classic Yandex.Disk desktop program. In the new program, you can work with files on your computer, syncing only the folders and files you need. Other folders and files are displayed in the program but are stored only in the cloud. You need an internet connection to access them.

The Yandex.Disk desktop program can be installed on the following operating systems: Windows 10, Windows 8 (classic interface), Windows 7, Windows Vista, 32-bit Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Note. To go back to the classic program or to Yandex.Disk 2.0, uninstall the new Yandex.Disk program first.

How syncing works

Each time you copy, edit or delete a Yandex.Disk file, these changes are replicated on the Yandex.Disk server and displayed on the Yandex.Disk page. And vice versa, if you upload files on the website, they'll be displayed in your Yandex.Disk desktop program.

Therefore, you see the same files on your Disk across all your connected devices. If you delete files from your desktop, they will be deleted from the cloud, too.

Tip. To delete a file from your computer, but keep it on the server, set up custom syncing.

For more information, see Sync data.

Installation

Download the program from the Yandex.Disk page. You will see instructions on how to run the file once it starts downloading.

The icon will appear in the Windows system tray when the installation is complete.

Signing in

After installation, the Yandex.Disk program prompts you to enter your Yandex username and password. The icon will display in the system tray until you log in.

If you don't log in right after you install the program, double-click on the program icon in the system tray.

If you still don't have a Yandex account, click on Register to sign up. Then enter your username and password.

Attention. If you use two-factor authentication or have used it before, you need a one-time password generated by the “Yandex.Key” mobile app to log in to the Yandex.Disk program.

Custom syncing

Yandex.Disk 3.0 lets you synchronize just the files you choose on your Disk to save disk space on the computer. For example, if you work with the Documents folder a lot, you can turn on synchronization for it to store the folder on your computer. The rest of the folders are stored only in the cloud, but are also available in the program.

The sync status is displayed on the file or folder icon.

  • — Syncing in progress.
  • — The file or folder is stored on the computer
  • — The folder contents is partly stored on the computer
  • — The file or folder is stored only in the cloud
  • — The syncing status is unknown
  • — Syncing error

Store a file or folder on the computer

To enable syncing for files or folders, select them from the list and click the Save to computer button above the file list or from the context menu. When the file is synced with the computer, the icon changes from to . After this, you can view the file in the Disk folder: click Show in Explorer in the file's context menu.

Store a file or folder in the cloud only

To free up space on your computer, turn off syncing for a file or folder. It is removed from the computer, but is still available on the Yandex.Disk page.

To do this, choose it in the list and click the Keep online only button above the file list or in the context menu. When a file or folder is removed from the computer, the icon changes from to .

Upload files to Disk

From the Disk folder in File Explorer
Open the Disk folder in File Explorer and drag or copy the files to it. This way files are saved both on the computer in the Yandex.Disk folder and in the Yandex.Disk cloud.
Tip. We recommend copying files, not dragging and dropping them. If the upload fails, you can try again.
From the Yandex.Disk program
Copy the files to the program window. This way files are saved directly to the Yandex.Disk cloud and aren't stored in the Yandex.Disk folder on the computer.
Tip. We recommend copying files, not dragging and dropping them. If the upload fails, you can try again.
Note. To save files and folders uploaded from the program both in the cloud and on the computer, right-click Yandex.Disk in the left-hand menu and disableSave new files and folders online only.
Via drop zone

If you frequently upload new files to Yandex.Disk, drag them into the drop zone that's displayed on top of all the windows in the lower-right corner of the screen. The files are uploaded to the Yandex.Disk root directory.

To enable the drop zone:

  1. Right-click the Yandex.Disk icon in the system tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Turn on the Show drop zone on desktop option.

You can track the file upload in the Tasks section (in the left menu of the program).

Note. If your internet connection is disrupted, your upload will be paused. When the connection is restored, the upload will resume.

To remove all completed uploads from the list, click  → Delete all completed uploads from the list.

After you upload your files, they will be on the server. You can open your Disk page to make sure that all the files have been uploaded successfully.

View and edit a file

To open a file for viewing or to make changes, double-click on it in the file list. The file opens in the default program for this file type. If you want to open a file in a different program, enter that program as the default for that file type.

When you edit and save a file, the changes are automatically uploaded to Yandex.Disk.

Download a file or folder

In the context menu of the file or folder, choose Create copy on computer.

The downloaded file doesn't sync with the cloud. If you downloaded and edited a file and want to add it to Yandex.Disk, upload it manually.

You can see the file download progress in the Tasks section. When the file is downloaded, you will see a pop-up notification in the lower-right corner of the screen or in the system tray. Click the notification to open the folder with the file.

Files are downloaded to your system's “Downloads” folder.

Move a file or folder

Moving files and folders works the same way as on a computer: just drag and drop them to the place you want.

To move an item, drag it to the appropriate place in the folder tree on the left. If you want to move an item to a subfolder, open the main folder in the tree first.

Share a file or folder

Choose an item and click Copy link above the file list or in the context menu.

If you click on an empty field inside the folder, then you can copy the link to that folder.

Delete a file or folder

Attention. When you delete files in the program, they are moved to the Trash and stored there for 30 days. They are then automatically deleted from the server. Once deleted from the server, these files cannot be restored. To delete a file from your computer, but keep it on the server, set up custom syncing.

There are several ways to delete an item:

  • Drag it to the Trash icon in the folder tree on the left.
  • In the context menu of the file or folder, choose Move to Trash.

To empty the Trash, right-click on the Trash icon and select Empty Trash.

How do I quickly switch to frequently used files?

To view files that you have recently worked with, go to the section Quick access (in the left menu of the program). This section displays the most frequently used folders and recent files that have been changed via both the Yandex.Disk program and the website.

You can customize the list of frequently used folders. To add a folder to this section, simply drag it there from the list of files and folders. To remove a folder from Quick access, select Remove from quick access panel in the context menu of the folder.

Auto-uploading photos and videos

The Yandex.Disk application doesn't support auto-uploading from devices connected to the computer. But you can turn on unlimited auto-uploading in the Yandex.Disk mobile app or upload files manually.

With unlimited auto-uploading enabled, photos and videos aren't saved to the Camera Uploads folder or synced with the computer program. To make photos from unlimited auto-uploading available on the computer, enable auto-downloads:

  1. Open File → Settings.
  2. Go to the Camera Uploads tab.
  3. Enable the Copy photos and videos to computer so they are readily accessible option.
  4. Choose where to create the Photos and videos from Yandex.Disk folder for downloaded photos and videos.
  5. Choose if you want to download all photos and videos that were auto-uploaded to Disk, or only the new ones.

Notes in Yandex.Disk

You can create notes in Yandex.Disk. They are automatically saved in the cloud and won't get lost if something happens to your device. You can also use your notes on several devices at the same time, for example, on your computer and phone. To do this, log in to Yandex.Disk on both devices.
