Download files

When you click the link to download a file, it can be opened for viewing or downloaded to the computer. The file is opened for viewing if the browser supports its format. The file is downloaded to the computer if the browser does not support its format. As soon as the file starts downloading, the file icon with the download indicator appears to the right of the SmartBox.

Note. When archives and executable files are being downloaded, Yandex Browser checks them for viruses and unwanted programs.

Stopping and restarting downloading

To stop downloading a file:
  1. Open the context menu for the icon of the file being downloaded .
  2. Click Stop download.
To restart downloading a file:
  1. Open the context menu for the icon of the file being downloaded .
  2. Click Restart download.

Saving a file open for viewing

Click the Save button in the right half of the SmartBox:

How do I open a downloaded file?

Open the last file that was downloaded
  1. Click the or icon in the right half of the SmartBox.
  2. Click the icon of the downloaded file.
Open a previously downloaded file
  1. Click the icon in the right half of the SmartBox.
  2. Select the file you need. If it is not in the list of recent downloads, click the Open folder link.
Open downloaded files automatically
  1. Click the button in the right half of the SmartBox.
  2. Select a file of the desired format.
  3. Click  → Open <file format> automatically.

Where downloaded files are saved

By default, files are saved in the following folders:

Operating system Directory
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 Users\<user account>\Downloads
macOS Users/<user account>/Downloads
Note. Support for Microsoft Windows XP and Vista operating systems ended in April 2017.
Open Downloads folder
  1. Click the icon in the right half of the SmartBox.
  2. Click the Open folder link in the top right corner of the window that opens.
Find out which folder your downloaded files are saved in
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Open Tools.
  3. The path to the file folder is specified in the Downloads section.
Change the folder for downloaded files
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Open Tools.
  3. In the Downloads section, click the link with the name of the folder the files are saved to, and select a folder.
    Note. If you want the browser to ask what folder to save files to and what to name them, select the Ask where to save each file before downloading option.

Download history

To go to the list of all downloaded files, click  → Downloads.

Hide a file from the download history
  1. Click  → Downloads.
  2. Select the file you need.
  3. Click and select Delete from list.

The file will be deleted from the downloads but will remain on your computer. You can find it in the folder that the downloaded files are saved to.

Clear downloads list
  1. Click  → Downloads.
  2. Click the Hide downloads link in the top-right corner of the page.

The list of downloads in the browser will be cleared. The actual files will not be deleted from the computer.

Delete downloaded files
  1. Click  → Downloads.
  2. Click the Open folder link in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Select the files you want.
  4. Click Delete.

Problems with downloading

Yandex Browser blocks file downloads

If the downloaded file contains malware, Yandex Browser blocks it. To find out more, see Blocking dangerous files.

What should I do if a download was interrupted?

Try to restart the download:

  1. Click  → Downloads or press the Ctrl + J keys.
  2. Select the file you need.
  3. Click the icon and select the menu item Restart download.

If the download isn’t restarted, try downloading the file again:

  1. Click  → Downloads or press the Ctrl + J keys.
  2. Select the file you need.
  3. Click the icon and select the menu item Download again.
