Files being downloaded may contain malicious code or undesirable programs. Malicious software that gets onto your computer can negatively impact its performance and steal, damage, or delete your information. Unwanted programs can do things like display annoying ads, install hidden software, or open third-party pages in your browser. This is why the browser scans all archives and executable files that are downloaded both directly and in the background.
Archived and executable files are checked during the download process. Yandex.Browser distinguishes certain file characteristics and sends them to be checked in the antivirus cloud on Yandex's server. Only the problematic part of the file is transferred to ensure that the security check goes as quickly as possible.
You can't open a file that is being checked. (The file icon on the right side of the SmartBox is inactive until the scan finishes.)
If a downloaded file contains malware, Yandex.Browser blocks it. Infected files are marked with the icon. If you try to open this type of file, you'll see the following window:
The browser keeps files containing malware and adds the infected extension to the file name. The file cannot be opened in this form from the browser or using any other software. This means the infected file can no longer pose a threat, but an antivirus program installed on your computer might still consider it dangerous.
If you didn't immediately delete the infected file, you can do so later from your Downloads folder:
Files that can install programs without your permission, show annoying ads, or automatically send you to third-party pages in your browser when opened are considered suspicious. The browser denotes these types of files with a icon when they are loading. If you attempt to open this type of file, the following window appears:
