Protect: check downloading files

Attention! Yandex.Browser able to protect you from malicious code downloads, but doesn't guarantee absolute protection against all modern threats to your computer. For more complete protection, use professional antivirus software in conjunction with Protect.

Why do downloading files need to be checked?

Downloading files may contain malicious software that enters your computer and prevents it from working; or steals, damages or deletes your information. Therefore, the browser scans all archives and executable files, whether downloaded by user request or in the background, by default.

The security process

Archived and executable files are checked during the download process. Yandex.Browser distinguishes certain file characteristics and sends them to be checked in the antivirus cloud on Yandex's server. Only the problematic part of the file is transferred to ensure that the security check goes as quickly as possible.

If a downloading file contains a malicious program, Yandex.Browser the infected extension is added to it. In this form the file cannot be opened from the browser or from any other software. This means it can't be a threat, although an antivirus program installed on your computer might consider it dangerous. The file will be stored on your hard drive until you decide whether to delete or unblock it.

Attention! We do not recommend opening files with infected filename extensions. As soon as you unblock such a file, it can activate the malware contained in it.

To unblock an unsecure file:

  1. Click the icon Downloads.
  2. Click the Allow this file to be opened button to the right of the selected file.

Now the infected filename extension will be removed, and you will be able to open the file.

If an error occurs when checking the file, the browser will re-check it. If the browser can't connect with the server when attempting to re-check the file, then the file will remain unchecked. The browser will notify you when you try to open the file. In this case you will have to check the file manually:

  1. Click the icon Downloads.
  2. Put the cursor on the file name and click Check file security.
