Turbo mode

What is Turbo mode?

Turbo is a mode that switches on when your internet connection is slow (it's implemented using Opera Turbo technology provided by Opera Software). It helps speed up site loading and saves on data traffic. Pages load faster due to reduced data volume (page contents are compressed on Yandex servers before being sent to the browser).

Restriction. Turbo mode does not apply to pages that are secured with HTTPS. These pages do not pass through the Yandex servers, and are instead displayed directly in the browser.

Automatically enabling and disabling Turbo mode

Two thresholds determine when Turbo mode switches on and off:

  • If the connection speed falls below 128 Kbit/s, Turbo mode automatically switches on. When the speed increases, it remains on until the speed exceeds 512 Kbit/s.
  • If the connection speed exceeds 512 Kbit/s, Turbo automatically switches off and the icon disappears. If the connection speed once again falls below 512 Kbit/s, Turbo mode will remain off until it falls below 128 Kbit/s.

Restriction.  You can't adjust the speed thresholds for switching Turbo mode on and off.

What happens when Turbo mode is activated?

When Turbo mode is on, the browser hides certain website elements, including multimedia. A placeholder displays in their place. To load the hidden content, click the placeholder. To load all hidden page elements, click Turbo and then Show all in the page that opens.

Compressing video

Yandex.Browser compresses videos when Turbo mode is on by default. Playback of the compressed video begins when you click the placeholder. Compressed video additionally saves up to 70% of traffic, but reduces the video quality. To view video without loss of quality, disable video compression for the tab or entirely.

  1. Click Turbo .
  2. In the Video compressed for faster downloads section, click Disable.
  1. click the icon Settings.
  2. In the Turbo section, turn off the Compress video option.

How can I manually disable Turbo mode?

  1. Click Extensions.
  2. Set the Turbo switch to Off

After doing this, Turbo will stop switching on automatically.

Mode settings

You can enable or disable Turbo mode, disable notifications, and disable video compression:

  1. click the icon Settings.
  2. In the Turbo section, set the desired options for Turbo mode.
