Translate pages, sentences, and words

The translation option is enabled in the Yandex Browser beta version by default. If you open a webpage in a foreign language, the browser offers to translate it into your browser interface language. You can also translate individual words or sentences without looking them up in a dictionary.

Translate

Yandex Browser automatically detects the language of the loaded page. If it is different from the interface language, the browser asks whether you want to translate it. You can also open the translation dialog window by clicking the icon in the SmartBox.

Restriction. If the browser language is Chinese, Japanese, or Kazakh, the translation icon does not appear.
  • To translate the page text to the browser interface language, click the Translate button in the window. To display the page text in te original language again, click Show original in the dialog box.

  • If you want to translate a page into a different foreign language, choose the language manually by clicking  → Translate page into a different language in the dialog window.

Translation settings

Translate pages automatically

If you want the browser to translate pages in the selected language without asking for permission:

  1. Open any page in the language you wish to enable translation for by default.
  2. Click  →  → Translate page into a different language.
  3. Enable the Always translate from <language> into <language> option.
  4. Click Translate.
Turn translation from a specific language off
  1. Open any page in the language that you don't want the browser to translate.
  2. Click  →  → Never translate from <language>.
Turn translation for a specific language back on
  1. Open any page in the language you want to re-enable translation for.
  2. Disable the  →  → Never translate from <language> option.

Check spelling in a foreign language

The browser checks spelling in text entry forms (for example, when you're writing an email).

Enable the spellchecker using a built-in dictionary
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Click Language and region settings.
  4. In the Spell check section, click Add language.
  5. On the left side of the Languages window, select the language.
    Note. If the language you need is not in the list, go back to the Language and region settings page. In the Page display language section, click the Add language link and select the desired language from the full list of languages that are supported by the browser.
Enable spell checking based on your own dictionary
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Click Language and region settings.
  4. In the Spell check section, click User dictionary.
  5. Select a dictionary.
Attention. If you enable a personal dictionary, the built-in dictionary will not be used for spell checking.
Add a word to your custom dictionary
  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Click Language and region settings.
  4. In the Spell check section, click User dictionary.
  5. In the upper-right corner of the screen, click Add.
  6. Enter the word.
  7. Click Add.

Turn translation off

If you do not want the browser to offer to translate pages:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Open Tools.
  3. In the Translate section, disable the Offer to translate pages that aren't in the same language as the interface.

If the translator doesn't work

The translator is enabled by default in the browser. Make sure that you have not turned off the translator manually:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Open Tools.
  3. In the Translate section, make sure the following options are enabled: Offer to translate pages that aren't in the same language as the interface and Translate selected words and phrases.

It's also possible that the page isn't translated because you chose not to translate it when viewing it previously. In this case:

  1. Right-click on the page.
  2. In the context menu, select Translate to English.

Change the interface language

Restriction. In Linux, the browser interface language is set in the system settings and cannot be changed.

To change the interface language in the Yandex Browser beta version:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Click Language and region settings.
  4. Select the desired language from the list in the Interface language field.
  5. If the desired language is not in the list, go to the Page display language section, click Add language and select the desired language from the full list.
