# Cookie files
## What is a cookie {#what}?

Cookie files are enabled by default in [Yandex Browser](https://browser.yandex.com/).

A _cookie_ is a small piece of data that is sent by the web server and stored on the user's computer. Cookies contain information about you. For example, your login and password, location, language settings, and products in your online store basket.
#### Why cookies are useful
- You don't have to re-enter your username and password on a site that requires authorization.
- If you left an online store without placing an order, the goods in your basket are saved for when you return to the store.
- If you specify your city when you first visit a weather forecast site, it won't ask you for your location again.
In web analytics tools (for example, [Yandex Metrica](https://yandex.com/support/metrica/index.html)) cookies are used to track user activity on the internet.
#### Why cookies pose a risk to privacy
- If someone uses your computer, and your logins and passwords are saved in cookies, they can access your accounts.
- If a hacker intercepts your cookies, they'll gain access to your personal data. They can be used to show intrusive ads.
In general, disabling cookies causes more inconvenience than allowing them. But if you want to do everything possible to prevent your data from leaking, disable cookies. After you do this, some sites may work incorrectly.
## Delete cookies {#del-cookie}
If you delete cookies regularly, this reduces the risk that your personal data might leak, and saves space on your hard drive. The browser allocates memory for cookies, and if you visit a lot of sites, the amount of memory can be quite large.

If you delete all cookies, you automatically log out of your accounts on all sites. Furthermore, you may lose items added to your carts and your location settings.

1. Press **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Del** (on Windows and Linux) or **Shift** + **⌘** + **Backspace** (on macOS). Alternatively, click **** → **History** → **Clear history**.
1. Under **Clear history**, select the time period that you want to delete the cookies for.
1. Select **Cookies and other site data and plugins** (deselect all other options if you want to delete only cookies).
1. Click **Clear**.

1. Click **** → **Settings** → **Websites** → **Advanced site settings**.
1. Under **Cookies**, click **Cookies and site data** → **Delete all**.

1. Open a page on the site.
1. In the [SmartBox](*smart-link), click the [connection status](https://yandex.com/support/browser/en/security/protect-panel.md#icons) icon.
1. The Protect panel opens. In the connection status section, click **Learn more**.
1. Click the **<...> cookie files for this site** link. A window with a list of cookies will appear.
1. Click  to the right of the desired cookie.

1. Click **** → **Settings** → **Websites**.
1. At the bottom of the page, click **Advanced site settings**.
1. In the **Cookies** section, click **Cookies and site data**.
1. Start typing the site name in the search bar on the left.
1. Hover over the line with the desired site and click **Delete**.

## Disable saving cookies {#block-cookies}
By default, all websites are allowed to save cookies.

1. Click **** → **Settings** → **Websites**.
1. At the bottom of the page, click **Advanced site settings**.
1. In the **Cookies** section, select **Not allowed**.

Some sites contain [trackers](https://yandex.com/support/browser/en/personal-data-protection/ytp.md), such as ad banners that collect information about you. To block them, select **Restrict third-party cookies** or **Block third-party cookies**.

## Enable saving cookies {#allow}
By default, all websites are allowed to save cookies. If you blocked cookies, allow saving them.

1. Click **** → **Settings** → **Websites**.
1. At the bottom of the page, click **Advanced site settings**.
1. In the **Cookies** section, select **Allowed**.

1. In the **Cookies** section, select **Site settings**.
1. In the page list that opens, go to the **Not allowed** or the **Only for session** tab.
1. Hover over the line with the desired site and click **Allow**.

**Remove cookies that were installed by a webpage**
1. On the error page, click the [connection status](https://yandex.com/support/browser/en/security/protect-panel.md#icons) icon in the [SmartBox](*smart-link).
1. The Protect panel opens. In the connection status section, click **Learn more**.
1. Click **<...> cookie files for this site**. A window with a list of cookies will appear.
1. Click  to the right of the desired cookie.
**Allow saving cookies from third-party sites**
1. Click **** → **Settings** → **Websites**.
1. At the bottom of the page, click **Advanced site settings**.
1. In the **Cookies** section, select **Allowed**.
