# Subtitles

The interactive subtitles created by Yandex can help you learn a foreign language, understand the meaning of a song, or sing karaoke. Subtitles can match the video's original language or be translated into or another language. When viewing subtitles for the original language, you can tap an unfamiliar word to see its translation.

## Watching videos with subtitles {#video}

{% note info %}

You can enable and configure subtitles only when the video isn't in fullscreen mode.

- Videos in other languages

  Yandex Browser displays subtitles in videos that have been dubbed by Yandex.

  A foreign-language video without a Yandex translation may also have subtitles, but those would be provided by the hosting platform (for example, YouTube) or the video uploader. If such subtitles are available, you can [turn them on](#dlentry-subtls-on) the same way as Yandex subtitles.

  Yandex provides subtitles for videos on a number of hosting sites, including [Coursera](https://yandex.com/promo/browser/coursera/), VK, YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, and 9GAG.

  1. In the video, tap ![](../_assets/subtitles-icon.png).

  1. To configure subtitles, tap ![](../_assets/promo-settings-icon.svg) and select:
      - **Subtitle language**: Select the original language or translation. If the video already has subtitles, you can select the service's subtitles instead of Yandex ones.
      - **Highlight words**: The words that are currently being spoken are highlighted. The option is only available for Yandex subtitles in the original language.

  {% note info %}

  If you have the original-language subtitles enabled and want to translate a word, just tap it. The video will pause, and the translation of the word and phrase will appear in a pop-up window. To continue watching, tap anywhere on the video.

  {% endnote %}

  {% endcut %}

  {% cut "**Turn off subtitles**" %}

  Tap the word "Subtitles".

  {% endcut %}

{% endlist %}

## Solving problems {#troubleshooting}

### There is no “Subtitles” button on the video {#no-subtitles-bar}

1. <!-- source: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/li-check-trans-video-and-subts-on.md -->
   Check if video and subtitle translation is enabled in Yandex Browser:

     1. Tap ![](../_assets/settings-menu-icon.svg) → ![](../_assets/shestern.svg) → **Yandex Translate**.

     1. Make sure that **Translate videos and subtitles** and **Untranslated subtitles** are enabled.

   <!-- endsource: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/li-check-trans-video-and-subts-on.md -->

1. If you're watching a video in fullscreen mode or on top of other apps (picture-in-picture), subtitles aren't available. To [enable](#dlentry-subtls-on) and configure subtitles, return to normal mode. Then you can reopen the video in fullscreen or on top of apps.
