Browser syncing

Syncing lets you save your main browser settings and personal data on a designated Yandex servers. All information is transmitted to the Yandex server over a secure channel. Only encoded passwords are sent. Access to your data on the server is protected by the same authorization system as on other Yandex services.

The following are synced by default: bookmarks, passwords, history, apps, plug-ins, and Autofill forms.

Syncing lets you:

  • Open the browser that has your personal settings on any computer or mobile device.
  • Save your browser settings even if something goes wrong with your computer.
  • View open tabs and bookmarks on synced devices.
  • Call phone numbers found in the internet without dialing them on your smartphone (see Push to Call).

You can turn off syncing or adjust the list of data to sync at any time when using the browser.

How often is data synced?

After you enable syncing, data will be synced each time you change data that is stored on the server. For example, when you add a bookmark on your computer, Yandex.Browser sends it to the server and simultaneously downloads all the changes you've made on your other devices since the last syncing.

How do I enable syncing?

Attention! If your browser has multiple profiles, make sure you are in your own profile before syncing (otherwise you might mix your settings and data with data from someone else's profile that is currently active).

For syncing to work you must:

  • Have Yandex.Browser installed on all the devices (computer, smartphone, tablet).
  • the same Yandex account is used on all the devices.

When syncing, there are two ways to sign in:

To enable syncing:

  1. Click  Sync.
  2. On the Syncing page, enter your Yandex username and password. If you haven't registered on Yandex yet, click the link Create account in the same window, and follow the instructions.

  3. Click the Enable syncing button.
  4. Click the link Change settings and indicate which settings should be synced.

At this point the browser offers to install the  app, a service that lets you store files on Yandex servers for free. If you have already installed this app, the browser suggests you turn it on so that you can store browser files on Yandex.Disk.

  5. Click Close.

Two-factor authentication offers greater account security than traditional passwords (which are complicated, have to be remembered, kept out of the reach of third-parties, frequently changed, etc.) Even if you take all these steps to protect your traditional password, it is still vulnerable to things like viruses that record your keystrokes. With 2FA, protecting your account is much simpler: you just need to remember a four-digit PIN code and have access to a smartphone or tablet where you have installed the Yandex.Key app with your account.

To enable syncing:

  1. Click  Sync.
  2. Open the Yandex.Key app, which you can get from the App Store or Google Play on your smartphone.
  3. On the Sync page enter your username and one-time password from the Yandex.Key app.
Note. If you haven't registered on Yandex yet, click the Create account link and follow the instructions. After registering, disable two-factor authentication.
  4. Click the Enable syncing button.
  5. Click the link Change settings and indicate which settings should be synced.

At this point the browser offers to install the  app, a service that lets you store files on Yandex servers for free. If you have already installed this app, the browser suggests you turn it on so that you can store browser files on Yandex.Disk.

  6. Click Close.

Note. The first time you turn on device syncing, it may take from several minutes to half an hour. The data is downloaded gradually to avoid slowing down the browser.
