# By audience

Use targeting by audience segments to serve ads to users who fall (or don't fall) into a certain user segment.

With targeting by audience segments, you can use first-party user data from your placements, as well as data from [Crypta](https://yandex.com/support/direct/en/technologies-and-services/crypta) to set up ad campaigns.

You can set up targeting by custom Yandex Audience segments or use Crypta segments.

{% note alert %}

Targeting by segments based on geolocation data isn't available.

{% endnote %}

## Custom segments {#own}

With [Yandex Audience](https://audience.yandex.com/?lang=en), you can create custom segments based on uploaded data (email addresses, mobile phone numbers, or mobile device IDs).

{% note info %}

All Adfox partners can create segments from their uploaded data, as well as [look-alike segments](https://yandex.com/support/audience/segments/look-alike.html?lang=en) and use them for free.

{% endnote %}

Find out how to add a custom segment in [Yandex Audience Help](https://yandex.com/support/audience/segments/create-from-file.html?lang=en). Once the segment status changes to **Ready**, the segment appears in the Adfox interface in the **Targeting** → **By audience** tab.

The segment will automatically become available in Adfox if you use the same Yandex ID to log in to Yandex Audience and Adfox. If you want to use segments from another account, [grant your Adfox account access to the segment](https://yandex.com/support/audience/access.html?lang=en) in the Yandex Audience interface.

## Crypta segments {#crypta}

Crypta is a Yandex technology that analyzes users' online behavior. It enables you to serve ads to users based on their age, income, and interests. Learn more about Crypta in [Yandex Direct Help](https://yandex.com/support/direct/en/technologies-and-services/crypta).

{% note info %}

 All Adfox partners have free access to Crypta segments without registering in Yandex Audience. You can access your segments from the campaign settings on the **Targeting** → **By audience** tab in the **Crypta segments** segment treе.

{% endnote %}

### Categories of Crypta segments {#crypta-categories}

- Children
- Pets
- Beauty and health
- Sports

- Family and children

- Clothing, shoes and accessories

## Set up targeting in Adfox {#settings}

{% note warning %}

When you use custom segments for the first time, it may take several hours to enable targeting. We recommend setting up targeting in advance, before the ad campaign starts running. If you have already used the custom segment, targeting will be enabled right away.

{% endnote %}

1. <!-- source: en/_includes/targeting/select-campaign.md -->
   In the **Campaigns** tab, select an ad campaign or find one using the search bar.
   <!-- endsource: en/_includes/targeting/select-campaign.md -->
1. <!-- source: en/_includes/targeting/select-campaign.md -->
   Next to the campaign name, click ![](../_images/kebab-2.png =15x20) → **Targeting** or select a campaign and go to **Targeting**.
   <!-- endsource: en/_includes/targeting/select-campaign.md -->
1. Press **Add a targeting condition** → **By audience**.
1. Choose a condition to apply to included and excluded audience segments _within each group_:

    - **AND**: The user must match all the selected segments.
    - **OR**: The user must match at least one selected segment.

    Note that only the **AND** condition can apply _between groups_ of included segments and excluded segments.

1. Set up targeting criteria:

    - In the **Included segments** search bar, select the segments the user must belong to.
    - In the **Excluded segments** search bar, select the segments the user should **not** belong to.

1. <!-- source: en/_includes/targeting/add-condition.md -->
   Click **Apply** and save the targeting criteria.
   <!-- endsource: en/_includes/targeting/add-condition.md -->

## Use cases {#example}

By analyzing audience behavior on your site with Yandex Metrica or AppMetrica, you can find out what users are interested in and segment them for precise targeting. For example, people who own a certain car model might spend more time in sections about that model, while football fans are more likely to watch broadcasts that feature their favorite team. Using data from the Yandex Audience tags, you can also segment users by similar behavior, providing advertisers with more granular and precise targeting options.

To reach the users who have already seen the ad and adjust how often they see it or to show them a different creative, you can create a segment using the Yandex Audience pixel.

You can also create look-alike segments based on custom segments in Yandex Audience. Use such segments to increase the reach of your campaigns. You can also get less coverage with greater accuracy, or the other way round.

## Reports {#reports}

Using reports, you can estimate how much of your inventory's audience belongs to specific Yandex Crypta segments. This helps you determine if your placement is suitable for campaigns targeting these segments.

The data on Yandex Audience segments is updated in the report in real time. To view the report, go to the **Reports** tab in the main menu and select **Usage**.

[More about Yandex Audience segment reports](https://yandex.com/support/adfox/en/statistics/reports/additional-reports.md)

### Report constructor {#builder}

To generate a segment report:

1. Go to **Reports** from the main menu and select **Report builder**.
1. Add **Crypta segments category**, **Crypta segments**, or both to your dimensions.

The report shows the number of ad requests from users matching each segment.

### Data calculation {#counting}

Data on Yandex Crypta segments is calculated by analyzing users' online behavior.

{% note warning %}

The audience reach in the report may be less than the placement's total traffic volume: this is expected behavior.

{% endnote %}

The Report Builder and the campaign usage report calculate data differently, so the two show different total values:

- The Report Builder calculates data by user. If a user belongs to multiple segments, they are counted in each one. This approach provides a complete cross section of the audience by segment.

- The usage report calculates data by query. Only the campaign's target segment is recorded for each query. This approach eliminates duplicate impressions.

### Sampling and data accuracy {#sampling}

Data in rows grouped by Yandex Crypta segments is sampled, meaning these values are approximate. Data in rows with higher-level dimensions than Segment (for example, Campaign, Banner, or Inventory) is precise.

When applying filters by segment, the values in the **Total** row may not match the sum of the table's individual rows.

The value for a top-level category (for example, Auto) may exceed the sum of its nested segments because some users belong only to the parent category and not to any of its subcategories.
