Official opening: April 28, 1877. For the first 28 years, the stadium was used by the London Sports Club exclusively for athletics competitions. In 1904, the stadium was owned by the brothers Gus and Joseph Mears, who offered the stadium to the Fulham club. After the rejection of this club in 1905, the Chelsea team settled in the stadium. The stadium was designed by architect Archibald Leitch. Initially, the stadium consisted of a 110-meter-long grandstand on the east side, which could accommodate up to 5,000 spectators. The rest of the stands were opened later.
