A must visit for Dostoyevsky or Russian Literature fans. Some of Dostoyevsky’s famous books were written here. The Museum is split into two sections: Dostoyevsky’s living space and then an exhibition and narrative of Dostoyevsky’s life. Both are very interesting. In Dostoyevsky’s apartment there is a clock that stopped on the day and time he died. The date is the old Russian calendar. The audio guide is highly recommended and there are English language information cards (see photos). If you have read most of Dostoyevsky’s books this museum fascinating. This is my second visit (with a friend). I also visited the house where Dostoyevsky grew up, next to the hospital where his father worked in Moscow. The upper floors have some very nice exhibits and a dramatic homicidal “Crime and Punishment” mural on the top floor. The staff at Dostoyevsky’s childhood house in Moscow asked me to wait at the Cashier for around 5 minutes, I was unsure the reason why. They arranged an English speaking literary student to give me a tour which was very helpful. There is a “memorial” to Raskolnikov (a fictional person) in St. Petersburg where “Crime and Punishment” was set. It is located on Stolyarniy Ulitsa. If you can read basic Russian you will get more value out of the visit. If you cannot read Russian I recommend to visit with a Russian person who can explain the exhibition further.

March 14, 2025. Walking through the cold and heavy atmosphere of Saint Petersburg, I felt this wouldn’t be an ordinary museum visit. It felt like going to meet a writer whose voice has been in my mind for years. Before entering, I stopped in front of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s statue. I gently cleaned the snow and dust off it with my hand. It wasn’t a random act — it was a gesture of respect, something that came from within. Then I stood there silently for a few seconds. It felt like a greeting… almost like asking for permission to enter. As I stepped inside, time seemed to slow down. The rooms are small, but filled with a deep and intense atmosphere. The walls, the objects, even the silence — everything feels like it has something to say. Especially in the study room… seeing the place where words were born is deeply moving. Just realizing the impact of what was written at that desk is enough. You don’t simply visit a house here. You confront your own inner world. For me, this wasn’t just a tourist stop, but an inner journey. A must-visit for anyone who truly feels literature.
