One of about 30 arch bridges preserved in Adjara. The creators of stone arch bridges in Adjara were Iberian and Meskhetian masons. According to the scientist Shalva Varshanidze, these bridges mostly date back to the IV–V centuries. At that time, Adjara, along with Samtskhe, was part of the Kartli kingdom. Some bridges were presumably built a little later, in the 7th–8th centuries. There is also a legend that many arch bridges in Adjara were built by order of Queen Tamar. According to legend, the bridges of Mahuntseti, Dandalo and Furtio were built simultaneously by her decree. There are also versions that the bridges could have been built by the Venetians and Genoese (they are mentioned by the explorer and traveler Tedo Sahokia), or the Byzantines (according to another legend). Most of the stone arch bridges in Adjara were built in the 9th–13th centuries, and a small part — in the late Middle Ages. These structures were often built on old trade and caravan routes, connecting internal and external routes.
