A standard 52-card deck is used. Cards are ranked from highest to lowest, with Ace being the highest and 2 being the lowest. Spades always beat other suits.
The objective is to take the number of tricks that were bid before the first move. Your score is mostly determined by this bid.
Partners who reach 500 points win the game.
