Yandex Launches Platform for Content Publishers
Internet, May 30, 2017. Yandex (NASDAQ: YNDX), a technology company that builds intelligent products and services powered by machine learning, launches a platform for creating and distributing content on mobile devices.
One of Europe’s largest internet companies and the leading search provider in Russia, Yandex has added the opportunity for publishers to use its AI-powered personally targeted content feed, Yandex Zen (https://zen.yandex.ru/media), for distributing their content to millions of users across the world.
The platform allows publishers, media companies, content creators and ordinary users to tell their stories by publishing their content directly on Yandex Zen. Yandex Zen is Russia’s largest source of traffic for media sites both on desktop and mobile devices. Yandex Zen currently has a daily audience of 6 million people in Russia alone and is available in 50 languages and in more than 100 countries.
Publishers can use Yandex Zen to create their own channels with text, video and advertisements, run media projects, and experiment with mobile formats. Companies can use it to tell their stories, promote their brands, distribute marketing materials and use native advertising to engage with their customers. For independent authors, Yandex Zen offers a means to earn money from advertising while publishing their stories to a wide audience.
“Just think how many great stories never get heard because they fail to reach their audience. Now artificial intelligence can solve this problem,” said Yandex Zen head Victor Lamburt. “There are stories everywhere: journalists report on important events, companies announce their products, bloggers write about anything and everything. Our goal is to give them new storytelling tools and find an appreciative audience for every story.”
A new storytelling format consisting of a series of easy-to-flip-through screens for multimedia content such as photos, GIFs, videos and text now available in Yandex Zen is called 'Narratives'. This publishing tool has already been used by Nike, Quiksilver, Vogue, MAXIM, Esquire, RBC media group, geographic magazine Vokrug Sveta, and many popular Russian video bloggers.
Authors publishing on Yandex Zen are supported through Yandex’s sponsorship program with a total annual budget of $1m. The sponsorship program is open to independent authors, teams and media outlets who publish original content that becomes popular among Yandex Zen users.
The Yandex Zen content recommendation service is integrated into Yandex Browser, the Yandex mobile application and Yandex’s home page. It is powered by artificial intelligence and offers personal recommendations to each individual user. As of May 2017, the average daily time spent by users on Yandex Zen is about 20 minutes.
The Yandex Zen publishing platform is launching in Russia first, with rollouts in other markets to follow.
