Internet, July 26, 2013. Yandex (NASDAQ:YNDX) has released the beta version of Islands – a new search platform that delivers results in the form of interactive blocks. It offers a shortcut to users’ ultimate search goals, by enabling actions such as booking movie tickets or tracking a post package right on the search results page.
“In May we announced the concept of Islands, which allows people to start using web sites right within the search results,” said the head of the project, Taras Sharov. “It’s a concept in which we provide the platform, and site owners fill it with content. Today we’re taking the next step and releasing the beta version of Islands with the first interactive answers. We’ll gradually increase their number, adding only those that are genuinely useful.”
The new platform comes with a new interface that can change depending on the search query. It presents answers in the form of blocks, which can accommodate various kinds of information – from texts to videos, pictures, and interactive forms. For user convenience, similar blocks are grouped together and the navigation menu only shows those Yandex services that are relevant to the current query.
Islands’ beta at beta.yandex.ru is active on Search, Images, Video and on the main page of Yandex. All other Yandex services will gradually be added.
Yandex is developing Islands for all devices simultaneously – computers, tablets and smartphones – so that people can resolve their tasks more quickly on whichever device they’re using.
Islands are available to users in Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. The platform where webmasters can try developing their own Island can still be found at its previous location
