Chelyabinsk and Kirov Join Yandex's Local Network Program

Internet, August 8, 2008. Web users in Chelyabinsk and in Kirov all web services provided by Yandex at local rates. All costs of renting a dedicated channel to Moscow are covered by ISP Multiregion, Yandex's partner in the Local Network Program.

The Local Network Program was launched last year. This project is Yandex's solution to the Internet access problem in Russia's regions: federal and local traffic in the regions have different payment rates and connection speed. In the framework of this project Yandex rents dedicated channels to large cities in every federal region, thus becoming a local web resource for the majority of web users in Russia.

Chelyabinsk and Kirov are the first cities in the project, where the costs of providing cheap and fast Internet access to Yandex's services are paid not by Yandex, but by the company's partner provider.

"Despite the tendency in the regions to switch from limited to unlimited tariffs, the majority of users have to skimp on their traffic," says Andrian Bushin, Head of Marketing at Multiregion. "Launching this project in partnership with Yandex will increase the number of new internet connections and the number active web users, which, as a result, will boost traffic not only to Yandex's services, but also to other online resources. We plan to use this experience in all 37 cities covered by the Multiregion Group".

There already are eight cities in Yandex's Local Network, which include Chelyabinsk, Ekaterinburg, Kirov, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Samara, Saint Petersburg and Vladivostok. The company also has its server equipment set up in Kiev and in Frankfurt.
