Yandex to Pay Scientists for Internet Mathematics

Internet, October 17, 2006. Yandex announces the second competition of scientific projects — Internet Mathematics 2007. The company intends to finance around half a year projects in the field of information retrieval and related disciplines, for a total amount of RUB 5 million.

The objective of this initiative is to promote the interest of researchers in issues of information retrieval, which is the most vital interdisciplinary area in modern science for Yandex. The participants of Internet Mathematics 2007 program will have access to unique data available to Yandex. The competition is open for participants from Russia as well as other countries. We invite students, post-graduates, research workers, and information system developers — irrespective of age, place of work, and work experience.

Applicants are to fill in the form, providing a short program of the proposed research, a description of data and methodology to be used, and an overview of the current status of the domain of the subject matter. The closing date for submissions is December 1; preliminary results will be announced before December 31, 2006. The authors of selected applications have to present their results by July 1, 2007.

Internet Mathematics 2007 is one of the regular scientific and educational initiatives held by Yandex. Two years ago, the company held the first competition and published winner projects in a collection of works “Internet Mathematics 2005”. That year, Yandex funded 34 projects for a total sum of RUB 3 million. Yandex also has a program supporting education — Class 2006; the results of the contest were announced in September.
