Metrica

Content recommendation platforms and messengers now in traffic sources list

28 April, 12:22

We've added two new traffic sources to Yandex.Metrica: content recommendation platforms and messengers. They are shown in the "Sources, summary" report in the general list of channels driving traffic to a website. Clicks from recommendation platforms are detected automatically, while messengers will need UTM markup.

Content recommendation platforms and messengers that Yandex.Metrica recognizes

Recommendation platforms: Yandex Zen, Google Discover, Opera Personal News, Sony News Suite, Flipboard.

Messengers: Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, WeChat. Other messengers are shown in the "Other messenger: determined by tag" row when utm_medium=messenger is present in the link.

The new sources are available both in the “Sources, summary” report and in other reports as dimensions or segmentation criteria.

Data on messengers and recommendation platforms is available starting from April 15, 2019.

How to use traffic data from content recommendation platforms and messengers

To do this, go to the "Sources, summary" report and expand the list of recommendation platforms.

How to correctly mark up links for messengers

If you already use UTM tags, make sure that utm_medium is set to messenger, and utm_source contains a specific messenger from the list above, for example: http://example.com/?utm_source=skype&utm_medium=messenger. Clicks on links that have already been marked up this way will be automatically displayed both in the report on tags and in the report on sources in the Messengers row.

And if you haven't worked with UTM tags yet, it's very simple. All you have to do is append this ending to the link:?utm_source=name of messenger&utm_medium=messenger. The name of the messenger must be written in full, without capital letters and without spaces (for example: telegram, whatsapp). To view the full list of tags for messengers, see the table with the description of traffic sources and go to "Messenger traffic". There is a detailed description of working with UTM tags in a separate article.

If you have questions about the new traffic sources, ask in the comments or contact support. We'll be happy to help!
